Avengers: Doomsday is on the horizon, and the highly anticipated movie is shaping up to be radically different from its fourth predecessors. While previous Marvel Cinematic Universe crossovers brought together heroes from all corners of the universe, things will be even more ambitious this time around. Characters from all around the multiverse will come together with one common goal: Stop Doctor Doom from reigning supreme above all of existence itself.
Variants of the X-Men from the Fox era will make their long-awaited MCU debut, just when that option seemed like an impossibility. But while that alone is enough to make us excited about what's to come, we also need to ask ourselves: Which other surprises is Marvel keeping under wraps until the release day? Well, one of them might've made its way online earlier than anticipated, and it's everything we could've hoped for.

Chris Evans will reportedly appear in Avengers: Doomsday
We might be on the verge of witnessing the comeback of the decade. According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, Chris Evans will "100%" appear in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. Now, it's worth pointing out that the beloved actor has portrayed two different characters in the MCU: the rebellious Johnny Storm during the events of Deadpool & Wolverine and the righteous Steve Rogers in... well, everything else. However, it has been reported that, between the two options, Chris will return as Cap once again.
This isn't the first time we've heard about such a highly anticipated return. Back in December 2024, Deadline confirmed that Chris Evans would join the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. Superhero fans couldn't have been any more excited at the time, but all of that hope quickly vanished once Chris himself confirmed there wasn't any truth behind this.
There's a case to be made that Marvel actors can't outright confirm their involvement in a project ahead of time. Just take a look at Andrew Garfield: He had to state multiple times that he wouldn't return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home—even if it was false—just to "preserve" the surprise until release day. With that in mind, there's a slight chance that history is repeating itself once again, except with Captain America.
Interestingly enough, it was also hinted that Chris Evans' superhero comeback could take place sooner than anticipated. The same insider reported that Marvel filmed a post-credits scene for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which features Nomad Captain America warning the super family about what's to come. That being said, we've also heard rumors that the MCU will use this spot to showcase Victor Von Doom's debut. So, which one of them will come to be? Well, it's now been confirmed that the movie has two post-credits scenes, so there's a slight chance that we'll see both of these ideas on the big screen.
It's worth remembering that Sam Wilson is currently the main Captain America in the MCU, and that won't change anytime soon. So, the idea of Chris Evans returning under the "Nomad" title could be the best way to allow both of these heroes to co-exist without stealing each other's spotlight. But hey, if three Spideys managed to share the screen at the same time, then two Caps wouldn't be all that bad.
If Steve Rogers' Captain America does come back, chances are he'll be a multiversal variant (especially if he's still under the Nomad title). However, there is also a small, albeit likely, possibility that we will see the same iteration of the character who was in the early days of the MCU. After all, Steve isn't dead like Tony Stark or Natasha Romanoff. He's simply traveled back to 1949 to live with the love of his life, Peggy Carter. And wouldn't you know it, but Fantastic Four: First Steps takes place in the '60s.
If Marvel's First Family were to travel from their reality to the MCU, without changing their time, they would likely cross paths with Captain America himself in the 60s. From then on, Steve could tell them about a certain group of Earth's Mightiest Heroes that could help with whatever threat endangers the multiverse, and they could all travel in time to the present day to meet with the rest of the characters we all know and love.
On the bright side, if Steve does make a comeback during the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, then it won't be long before we see it play out for ourselves.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released on Jul. 25, 2025.
