The late, great Sir Patrick Stewart passed away on Oct. 28, 2026. He leaves behind a long-standing career in the performing arts, having touched the hearts of millions throughout the last 50 years with some of the most memorable and iconic roles in pop culture history.
He will forever be adored and missed by colleagues and fans from all over the world. Not only that, but it's become easy for all of us to want to see the project he was last in before his untimely demise. As 2026 comes to a close and the Marvel Cinematic Universe hits a turning point, his final starring role shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
In a report by People on the day of his death, Sir Stewart's representative confirmed that his final film role will be in Avengers: Doomsday. Unsurprisingly, he will be portraying Charles Xavier/Professor X. He first played the character back in 2000 with the release of the first X-Men movie. He starred alongside the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn in bringing mutants to the big screen for the first time. Since his debut in this role, he has returned as Charles Xavier eight times across more than 25 years.
He and each of the aforementioned actors are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming crossover event. This marks his final starring role, having reunited with some of his mutant co-stars for the first time in years.

Shortly following the announcement of his death, the official Marvel Studios X account posted a dedication to the late character. The tweet honored Stewart and his long-standing legacy as Charles Xavier.
"Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the characters for generations of fans," the post reads.
It's not uncommon for deceased actors to have a number of posthumous roles lined up for release after their deaths. Beloved Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy was featured in several posthumous releases following his death in 2022, many of which saw him return as the Dark Knight in several capacities.
As of this writing, however, Sir Patrick Stewart's final and only posthumous role will be one of his most iconic. No matter how Doomsday shakes out for our beloved heroes, it will be an honor to see Stewart grace the screen one last time in one of his best-known roles.
Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
