If you’re a comic book fan, this is a new kind of golden age. Superhero projects have been in high demand and keep getting better - and it's not just from DC and Marvel, either. Shows like The Boys and Invincible on Prime Video have proved that there’s a market for programs from companies like Image Comics. Now, it sounds like we're getting another long-awaited adaptation.
Recently, The Hollywood Reporter announced that BOOM! Studios will get into the game with James Tynion IV and Werther Dell'Edera’s series Something Is Killing The Children, getting a movie and a series adaptation with Blumhouse Productions (Cabin in the Woods and Five Nights at Freddy's).
"James and Werther’s comic book series taps into our most primal fears, luring us into a fascinating world and introducing Erica Slaughter, the ass-kicking hero we all wish we had to fight the monsters that lurk in the dark."Jason Blum
THR reports, “Blum will produce the live-action feature for Blumhouse with the company’s Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. Stephen Christy and Tynion will produce the film for Boom! Studios/Penguin Random House.”
It’s not surprising that Something Is Killing The Children is getting a movie and a TV series because the comic book series is superb. It’s more than just the horror (that fans will love). Star of the series, Erica Slaughter, is a deep character with a tragic past. Not just the unfortunate circumstances that brought her into the game of tracking and killing monsters. She starts to understand that the rules and rulers of the Order of St. George aren’t right. It leads to a struggle within and without.
That’s just the story of Erica Slaughter. Within this universe are a plethora of characters that people will enjoy. For example, inside the Order of St. George are people who are entertaining, problematic, and extremely dangerous. However, even the more deplorable characters are intriguing. It makes readers (and soon viewers) interested in what makes them who they are.
Sometimes it’s easy to see that it was nurture and the need to be accepted that brought many of the Order of St. George down a dark and selfish path. But out of nowhere, you’ll see someone break tradition and do something unexpected, regardless of the consequences. This is why James Tynion IV and Werther Dell'Edera's series continues to be praised. The monsters and gore can grab some readers, but depth is why new fans keep coming and the older ones return.
Even when the Blumhouse projects aren’t the best, they still look amazing. That means the essence of the comic will be seen, as well as the creepiness of the monsters. And since creators James Tynion IV and Werther Dell'Edera are still involved, there’s no doubt that fans of the source material will be satisfied with the finished product.
