After nearly five years, Tom Holland's Spider-Man is finally back on the big screen courtesy of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Audiences worldwide are watching the wall-crawler save the day once more in an ambitious Marvel Cinematic Universe project that features other iconic characters such as the Punisher and Hulk. But while all eyes are currently set on Peter Parker's latest adventure, Sony is already looking at what lies ahead.
At this point, it is very well-known that Sony's Spider-Man Universe is officially dead. The studio's attempt to build a cinematic franchise featuring Spidey villains but no iteration of the wall-crawler for them to fight was met with mixed results, to say the least. While the Venom trilogy did manage to become a box-office success, the same cannot be said about Madame Web, Morbius, or Kraven the Hunter. On top of that, none of these projects were released to positive reviews. That begs the question: Where does Sony go from here? Well, while Tom Holland will keep swinging across New York's skyline in the MCU, an iconic Spider-Man villain is getting a second life on the big screen.
Sony confirms an animated Venom movie is coming our way
The Lethal Protector's live-action trilogy may have come to an end, but the character still has a bright future ahead. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Spider-Man: Brand New Day producer Amy Pascal revealed that Sony is actively working on an animated Venom film.
Reports about the project's existence first surfaced back in February 2026, when The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Sony wants to flesh out the iconic Spider-Man villain by making him the star of an R-rated adventure. Furthermore, the directors of Final Destination: Bloodlines, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, are reported to be attached to the project.
While it's still too early to tell what Sony plans to do with the overall Spider-Man IP moving forward, recent developments and reports give us a pretty good idea of what to expect. For starters, insider That REDACTED Guy revealed that a new deal between Sony and Disney was struck, which will allow the latter to use Spider-Man characters across any MCU project. That means we could see villains like Tombstone appear in shows like Daredevil: Born Again.
Spider-Noir's overwhelming success could also be an indicator that the live-action Spider-Man projects will (at long last) feature a Spider-Man variant as their main character. Furthermore, just as Spider-Noir was set in an alternate universe separate from the MCU, we should expect the same from other hypothetical shows that could be in the works.
Last but certainly not least, it seems Sony will still try to create films centered around Spider-Man villains, but they will be animated going forward, which could help reduce budgets. Besides, the Spider-Verse franchise has proven that there is definitely room for overwhelming success with animated projects. Perhaps the Venom film could even be tied to that universe and act as a spin-off of sorts.
The Venom animated film is still in its early days, which means more concrete announcements are a long way off. But at the very least, we know the project is a reality, and we can't wait to see what surprises lie in store for the Lethal Protector.
