Although Spawn is hardly a series associated with cheerfulness, comic book readers will still be feeling the Christmas cheer when a new festive season-themed Spawn comic arrives in stories later this year.

Titled I Saw Santa: A Spawn Universe Christmas Story, the two-part miniseries focuses on a vengeful child who sets out on a brutal crusade against Santa impersonators after being given a lump of coal for Christmas. As with most Spawn stories, I Saw Santa: A Spawn Universe Christmas Story will clearly not be for the faint of heart, and the cover by Marco Failla, which shows Santa discovering a plate full of severed ears and eyeballs instead of milk and cookies, certainly showcases the book’s harrowing tone. Thankfully, Spawn sets out to stop the vengeful child’s foolish vendetta before the kid’s antics can get any worse. The series will also prominently feature Sam and Twitch, two NYPD officers who play a central role in the Spawn franchise, and fans will be glad to see the two familiar cops on the case.

Created by Todd McFarlane and first released in 1992, Spawn went on to become one of the most successful independent comic series of all time. The series focuses on a former special forces operative named Al Simmons who is killed in action before being resurrected as a superpowered being known as a Hellspawn. Cursed with demonic powers while also struggling to hold on to what remains of his humanity, Simmons finds himself needing to choose between being humanity’s saviour or bringing about the apocalypse as an inevitable war between the forces of Heaven and Hell looms on the horizon.

The series has received countless spin-offs, and a film adaptation was released in 1997, with a reboot currently being produced by Blumhouse. Although, that one has now been in development for so long that whether or not it will ever actually be released really is anyone’s guess. But there was also a successful Spawn animated series, which also debuted in 1997, and which ran for three seasons. t's considered the definitive adaptation of the character outside of the comics and for good reason!

I Saw Santa: A Spawn Universe Christmas Story is being written by Chris Killian and Andrew Sanders, with Thomas Nachlik providing the interior artwork. The first issue will be published by Image Comics on November 26, for $5.99. And while it certainly will not be the most upbeat Christmas comic on the market, it still sounds like I Saw Santa: A Spawn Universe Christmas Story will offer fans a story they will never forget.
