To say Marvel and Sony have been finding a lot of success with Spider-Man: Brand New Day would be an understatement. The friendly neighborhood hero crawled to unprecedented heights when his latest live-action adventure became the third-highest-grossing movie ever made, just behind Avengers: Endgame and James Cameron's Avatar. The Marvel Cinematic Universe needed an astounding victory to kick off the end of its Multiverse Saga, and the web-slinger certainly delivered. Better yet, Brand New Day culminated with the promise that Spider-Man will return.
With two Avengers movies on the horizon, it's all but confirmed that Tom Holland's Peter Parker will join forces with Earth's Mightiest and fight against Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. However, Marvel tried to remain tight-lipped about the hero's future, dancing around any questions about a possible Spider-Man 5 and refusing to confirm whether its most iconic hero would get another installment in his solo franchise. Then again, it was extremely likely that a new movie would grace the big screen, especially after Brand New Day surpassed the $2.4 billion mark at the box office.
Fortunately, the curtain has finally been lifted, and not only is Spider-Man 5 a reality, but it will feature the return of a beloved Marvel director.
Destin Daniel Cretton will direct Spider-Man 5
As reported by Deadline, Destin Daniel Cretton has a lot of projects in his slate, including the "next Spidey installment." The news broke as part of a bigger report that reveals the acclaimed director is nearly set to helm a Hawaii Five-0 film for Paramount, although the studio has yet to close the deal.
During an interview with Deadline, Cretton himself suggested that Spider-Man 5 is already in the works and that he'll be set to direct once again:
"I have seen the theories [about Ned remembering Peter], and I love the theories. I think they're so cool, and I don't want to stop that conversation by putting my opinion in the middle of it. Knowing there will be another movie, that conversation will continue in the writers' room as we figure out — if we figure out — what we're going to do next."
Now the biggest question in store is, when will the web-slinger be back on the big screen? In addition to the Hawaii Five-0 movie, Cretton has two other high-profile movies coming in the future: a Naruto live-action adaptation and a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. While none of these projects have a release date yet, the order of priority will determine whether we'll have to wait another five years for another Spider-Man movie. After all, Shang-Chi hasn't been seen again since his MCU debut five years ago, and while the iconic hero will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, the status of his sequel remains very much a mystery.
On the one hand, it wouldn't be surprising to learn that Marvel wants Shang-Chi to have a more prominent role in its next Saga, and the first step in making that happen would be to finally give him the spotlight as soon as possible. However, the incredible success of Brand New Day could also mean the studio will prioritize Spider-Man 5, which will be a guaranteed box-office success no matter what.
Former Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Marvel will release no more than three movies and two shows per year moving forward. If that were to be true, then 2028 is fully booked already thanks to the release of Black Panther 3, Ghost Rider, and X-Men. As such, the earliest Spider-Man 5 could come our way would be 2029—three years after Brand New Day—but a 2030 release would be all the more likely.
Of course, if the studio were to make one exception, it would surely be for the wall-crawler. But while the release date of his upcoming film is pretty much up in the air right now, it's nice to have the confirmation that the film is actually happening and that it will feature the same creative team behind Brand New Day. With how critically acclaimed the latest MCU film was, it was just a matter of time before we got confirmation that Destin Daniel Cretton would return to the saga.
