Following the spectacular success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in theaters, people are already talking about a potential fifth film in the franchise. More recently, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Ravi Ahuja dropped a hint about when fans can expect to see Spider-Man 5 in theaters.
According to Variety, when discussing Spider-Man 5, Ahuja said, “We don’t have a date for it yet. A couple years usually, but there’s a Spider-Verse movie coming next year.” The statement suggests that fans will have to wait until at least mid-2028 to see Spider-Man 5.
It's no wonder that Sony is already planning a sequel to Brand New Day. Box Office Mojo reports that the movie has made more than $2.4 billion in theaters worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time. At this point, it seems like a fifth Spider-Man film would be at the top of Sony and Marvel's to-do list.
Could Spider-Man 5 premiere in 2028?

Fans could possibly see the fifth Spider-Man movie in theaters in 2028, even with the third Spider-Verse movie premiering in 2027. Remember, the first Spider-Verse movie came out in 2018, between 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Sony and Marvel have shown they don't have to wait any longer to release Spider-Man 5 because of the Spider-Verse franchise.
Spider-Man 5 arriving in 2028 would give the Marvel Cinematic Universe four new films in one year, including the X-Men reboot, Ghost Rider, and Black Panther 3. While that seems like too many films, the MCU previously released four films in 2021, including Spider-Man: No Way Home.
However, it may be harder for Sony and Marvel to get the cast of Spider-Man 5 ready for a 2028 release. Actors like Tom Holland and Zendaya have become some of Hollywood's busiest stars, so Marvel and Sony may have to accommodate their schedules in order to make Spider-Man 5. And speaking of Holland, it's highly likely that he will be busy playing Spidey in Avengers: Secret Wars, so it may not feasible to make that and Spider-Man 5 happen so closely together.
Should Spider-Man 5 come out in 2028?

Although Marvel Studios and Sony could theoretically release Spider-Man 5 in 2028, a stacked film lineup may not be the best thing for them or fans. With three MCU films set to release that same year, Marvel risks overwhelming themselves by working on four big-budget projects at once. Fans have already witnessed the MCU's decline in quality as it started releasing multiple films and TV shows in 2021.
With Marvel already releasing three major films in 2028, it's hard to blame them if they space out their projects and save Spider-Man 5 for later. Since Spider-Man is one of Marvel and Sony’s most beloved IPs, it is also understandable that they may want to take their time writing, filming, and editing a fifth movie. They certainly didn't rush to make Brand New Day, as it took almost five years to premiere in theaters after the 2021 release of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Though the release date for Spider-Man 5 hasn't been confirmed, Ahuja has made it clear that a sequel is coming. It will be a while before fans see Spider-Man 5 in theaters, but Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse should help ease the wait when it arrives in 2027. Fans could also see Spider-Man return within the next year in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
