There are many things to praise about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, including its stellar swinging sequences, its three-dimensional "villain," and incredible performances from everyone in the cast. However, one of the most unique elements of the film is undoubtedly its opening sequence.
Superhero fans worldwide had to wait nearly five years to see the wall-crawler back in action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and through this time, they couldn't help but wonder what the masked menace had been up to. Fortunately, the movie gave us an answer in the form of a fast-paced montage that showcased Peter facing off against iconic villains, such as Boomerang, Tombstone, Tarantula, Scorpion, The Hand, and even members of Silvermane's crime syndicate.
This was an amazing way to bring us up to speed on Spidey's adventures since we last saw him in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it also set the mood for the events to follow. However, we were originally in for an even bigger display of Spidey's prowess, as revealed by the film's director, Destin Daniel Cretton.
Destin Daniel Cretton reveals a cut Spider-Man: Brand New Day scene was going to include 'a bunch' of classic villains
Being a friendly neighborhood hero in New York isn't easy, but it could've been way more complicated. During an interview with Nerdtropolis, Destin Daniel Cretton was asked whether there were more obscure foes that he wanted to include in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, to which the director replied:
"There was a whole other scene that ended up getting cut from the movie. We were going to throw a whole bunch of villains into this one giant fight scene that ended up getting cut. But we were looking at a lot of the old classics. It was really fun, though. We got to design a lot of them. Maybe for another one we'll bring it back."
Billy Clements, who portrayed the role of Ramrod in the opening montage of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, also revealed that a lot of his character's scenes didn't make it into the final cut and that multiple "recognized actors" were cut from the movie altogether:
"A lot of Ramrod's stuff was cut, but when they had to cut out 3 hours and a lot more recognized actors were totally cut out, so I'm really happy to be there if only for a bit."
While Clements didn't specify which characters were dropped from the movie, it isn't far-fetched to assume they were villains originally included in the opening montage as well. After all, 8-Ball was originally rumored to be part of this sequence, alongside The Enforcers. Furthermore, during an interview with OutNow, Destin Daniel Cretton revealed that Paste-Pot Pete was part of the movie but ended up being cut.
During the opening sequence of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there's a blink-and-you-miss-it moment in which audiences see Peter's investigation board, which has a map of New York with many notes on it. One of these notes reads, "Hammerhead Club. Money Laundering," meaning it was entirely possible we would've seen Hammerhead on the big screen as well.
On the bright side, there's still a chance that some of these villains will show up in upcoming Marvel releases, especially if their live-action designs are already set in stone. It has been reported that Sony and Disney struck a new deal that will allow the latter to use Spider-Man characters across any MCU project—something that wasn't possible before, as evidenced by the fact that Kraven was envisioned to be a villain in the first Black Panther film, but Sony didn't allow it. So, who knows? Maybe the likes of The Enforcers or Hammerhead could appear in a TV show like Daredevil: Born Again. At this point, the sky is definitely the limit.
