Spider-Man: Brand New Day will reportedly feature a classic Spider-Man villain

The wall-crawler has his work cut out for him, as the list of supervillains that will appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day keeps growing.

Throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man has faced no shortage of threats. He kicked his career off big time by fighting against the likes of Captain America, Bucky, and Sam Wilson. Furthermore, he now has come toe-to-toe with the Vulture, Shocker, Mysterio, Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, Electro, the Green Goblin, and Sandman. Surely, the worst has already passed and is behind the friendly neighborhood hero. After all, it's not like Spider-Man: Brand New Day could introduce multiple different supervillains all of a sudden... right?

Well, let's just say that the wall-crawler has a lot of problems on the horizon.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature the appearance of multiple antagonists, including Scorpion, Savage Hulk, the Hand, Tombstone, Tarantula, Boomerang, Ramrod, and the mystery main bad guy who is rumored to be Jean Grey. That brings us to a grand total of eight different foes, and the list could keep growing according to a new report. Brace yourselves, because it may be time for the rematch of a lifetime.

Shocker will reportedly appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

According to renowned insider Daniel Richtman, Shocker isn't done with the Spider just yet, as the iconic supervillain is set to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The last time we saw Shocker was during the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming, when he was webbed to the side of a school bus by the friendly neighborhood hero.

Interestingly enough, a deleted Spider-Man: Homecoming scene showcased that Herman Schultz was arrested by the police and that one of Peter's classmates, Tiny McKeever, kept his gauntlets. With that in mind, there are two possibilities here. First, there's a chance that Tiny will act as the new iteration of the villain and face the spider at some point in Brand New Day. However, it is very unlikely that Marvel will take the Shocker mantle away from Herman, so that leaves us with a second, and more likely, option.

The last time we saw Mac Gargan (AKA the Scorpion) in the MCU was in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming, where the villain was seen in prison seeking revenge against the wall-crawler. So, there's a chance that both Mac and Herman share the same roof, as they were both captured by the police.

We know there's bound to be a big breakout scene in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. We've seen Peter battling the Hand inside a prison, and we know that Mac Gargan will escape and finally get to wear the Scorpion suit. So, who's to say that Herman won't take this opportunity to escape as well?

Of course, there's a third and simpler answer regarding the Shocker's mystery appearance in Brand New Day. It has been officially confirmed that the wall-crawler's upcoming adventure will have an opening montage, and it has been reported that this sequence will showcase the wall-crawler fighting multiple different enemies since the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Fans have speculated that foes like Tarantula, Boomerang, and Ramrod will only appear in the opening montage (hence why we'll see a recreation of a comic book cover when Spidey goes against each of these villains). So it is likely that the Shocker will also be part of this sequence, appearing with no explanation or backstory behind who is behind the mask. He could simply show up, recreate yet another comic book cover with Spidey, and then completely disappear from the film.

If the Shocker does appear in Brand New Day, it would bring the total villain count to nine. That's without taking into account the reports that 8-Ball and The Enforcers will also steal the spotlight in the upcoming MCU film (if only for a moment). Of course, this could lead to concerns that Brand New Day will be a very crowded movie, much like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 or The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Fortunately, early reactions indicate that audiences will be in for a memorable MCU adventure that might even surpass Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. That means that director Destin Daniel Cretton managed to crack the code for making a superhero movie with many moving pieces without it feeling convoluted. Better yet, it won't be long before we discover whether that is true for ourselves.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released on July 31, 2026.
