Peter Parker isn't the only person behind the iconic Spider-Man mask. Throughout the years, many people have donned the "Spider-Man" mantle (or some variation of that title), while also shooting webs, climbing walls, and, most importantly, saving anyone who needs it. We even got to see Ben Reilly steal the spotlight in live-action courtesy of the Spider-Noir show, while Miles Morales has his own animated Spider-Verse trilogy. These heroes exist all across the multiverse, and yet only Peter has appeared in live-action on the big screen. However, Marvel could soon change that.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally here, and there's a lot to unpack. We already knew multiple established characters from the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe were set to make an appearance, including Bruce Banner and Frank Castle. Fortunately, the film didn't settle for this, as it also reintroduced a key hero who might prove to be instrumental to the future of the franchise.
But before we begin, be warned: There will be minor spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day ahead. If you don't want any kind of surprises ruined (even if they are very minor), then it's time to turn back now.
Still here? Great, then it's time to break down how the MCU just reintroduced Cindy Moon and how Silk could have a bigger role moving forward.
Cindy Moon, AKA Silk, has a minor cameo in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Cindy Moon first appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, played by actress Tiffany Espensen. She was a member of the school's decathlon team and went to Washington, D.C. alongside Peter and Ned. The character would also appear very briefly in Avengers: Infinity War inside a school bus, moments before Peter asked Ned to create a distraction so that he could escape unnoticed and investigate the huge alien ship flying above the city. However, the character was then seemingly forgotten by Marvel... until now.
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter attends one of Bruce Banner's college classes with the hope of talking to him about mutating DNA after the lecture. Well, during the class, we see a student suddenly raise her hand to ask her professor an Avengers-related question, and it turns out the student is none other than Cindy Moon herself (better known as Silk in the comic book world).
It's very fitting for Cindy to be so curious about Bruce Banner's superhero stories, and whether Thanos could've found a better solution to the whole problem of how "there are not enough resources to sustain life." We could be witnessing the origin story of a new Marvel hero, and there's reason to believe Silk could one day suit up on the big screen to save the day.
Sony currently holds the live-action rights for any Spider-Man adaptation, while the rest of Marvel's heroes are under the Disney umbrella. The only reason Spidey is able to live in the MCU is that the two companies were able to strike a deal right before the release of Captain America: Civil War. Since then, Sony went ahead and tried to launch its own cinematic universe starring Spider-Man villains, but most of its films (like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven) were commercial and critical failures. As such, this universe came to an end before it could really take off.
This context is important because insider That REDACTED GUY reported that—after the death of Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU)—Sony and Disney struck a new deal that will allow the latter to "utilize the Spider-Man IP throughout all their projects." If this is true, Marvel could finally introduce audiences to live-action versions of other Spider-People such as Miles Morales and Silk, and not just in their civilian forms but as heroes swinging across New York's skyline.
Only time will tell whether there's more to Cindy Moon than meets the eye. For the time being, it's nice to know that Marvel hasn't completely forgotten about her character.
