Spider-Noir just received a promising season 2 update

Will we see more of Ben Reilly on the small screen? It certainly seems that way, as a new update indicates that Spider-Noir Season 2 was always on Sony's mind.

It takes no detective to figure out that Spider-Noir has been one of the best superhero shows in recent years. While the final season of The Boys was met with a mixed reception and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 saw a 54% drop in viewership compared to its predecessor, Prime Video's latest series was released to critical acclaim and quickly became the No. 2 most-watched show on Prime Video in June. Needless to say, fans were captivated by the tale of Ben Reilly, and they want more.

Unfortunately, Spider-Noir Season 2 isn't a reality just yet. The first season had a reported budget of $400 million, which is a big investment that Amazon and Sony may not want to repeat. Furthermore, Nicolas Cage said that he isn't sure a second season will ever happen, adding that the team behind the show achieved what they set out to do, which was to create a first season that works on its own. But against all odds, we now have a positive update regarding Spider-Noir Season 2.

Cat Hardy actress Li Jun Li says many cast members have contract obligations for a second season of Spider-Noir

It seems Amazon and Sony always considered the possibility of developing a sequel for Spider-Noir. During an interview with The Direct, the actress behind Cat Hardy, Li Jun Li, revealed that many cast members have contractual obligations to return for a second season if it ever gets greenlit:

"Yes, there are contract obligations for many of us. I honestly don't know anything about Season 2. I wish I knew. Of course, I love the show so much. I love Cat Hardy so much. I would love for there to be a Season 2, and it really is all dependent on you guys and the viewership."

Spider-Noir told a mostly self-contained story that doesn't really need a continuation. However, there are a few loose ends that could be tied up moving forward. Episode 6 hinted that Ben Reilly is a fabricated name and that, throughout this whole time, we've been seeing Peter Parker steal the show. With that in mind, a second season could finally solve this mystery.

We have also yet to learn more about Ben's past prior to the war. If Peter Parker is indeed introduced, we could see glimpses of him living with Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Furthermore, a potential second season of Spider-Noir could introduce key players from the comic book series, such as The Goblin, Kraven, and The Vulture (a monster who literally eats Uncle Ben).

It's important to remember that part of the reason Spider-Noir Season 1 was so expensive to produce is because it was meant to be watched completely in black and white. Sets were originally painted green, brown, and pink to better complement the gradients of gray that fans would've watched in the final version. So when it was decided that a colored version would also be included, extensive reshoots were needed, and they lasted almost a year.

If a second season of Spider-Noir is greenlit, then Amazon and Sony can use the experience they gathered from the first season to film both a black-and-white and a color version from the get-go. This would ensure the budget doesn't cross the $400 million mark yet again. But even if a second season of Spider-Noir doesn't come our way, Nicolas Cage will reprise his role as a multiversal variant of the character in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. So, at the very least, we'll get to hear more of him as the wall-crawler next year.

Spider-Noir is now streaming on Prime Video.
