Supergirl gets an all new DC Comics title ahead of July's Superman

Supergirl is getting a new ongoing series with Sophie Campbell writing and illustrating the comic. What’s even better is it’s right on time to start the momentum leading into Superman.

The Summer of Superman is a brilliant marketing move by DC Comics. Not only does it help remind people of James Gunn's Superman movie, which premieres on July 11, 2025, but it’s also a way to celebrate the Man of Steel’s holiday of April 18; the day he first debuted.

The “Summer of Superman” was announced with various comic books including stories in the normal continuity and stories involving Supes, special issues, and variants galore. There’s even a comic for younger kids called Superman’s Good Guy Gang. But wait, there's more: DC Comics has announced that Kal-El’s super cousin Supergirl is getting a solo title written and illustrated by the amazing Sophie Campbell (Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Jem and the Holograms).

Sophie Campbell is a fan of Supergirl (whose real name is Kara Zor-El), which makes this a great decision for DC Comics’ All In initiative. She's excited about the opportunity, too, saying:

“My main touchstones to Kara Zor-El were the stories and the wild costumes from the ’70s, the 1984 Supergirl movie, and The CW show, which I was a huge fan of. In creating this version of Supergirl, I’ll be drawing on some of those influences as the series unfolds.”

Campbell's passion and knowledge will make this title a must-read title. And since it’s been some years since the Girl of Steel starred in her own comic, now is the perfect time to bring her back.

Campbell also shared of her excitement to tell this story:

"I came up in the comics industry doing mostly graphic novels that I wrote and drew myself, so doing the same with Supergirl feels like I’m returning to my storytelling roots."

Supergirl made her debut in DC Comics back in Action Comics No. 252 in 1959. Since then, she’s had multiple self-titled series (maxi, mini, and ongoing) and frequently appears in Action Comics, Superman, and more. However, the most popular comic among them could be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. A series that’s being adapted into a movie in 2026. With that film coming up next year, it makes sense that DC Comics would start a series to gain momentum for her movie (and expected appearance in Gunn's Superman).

Supergirl has been a household name for decades and Melissa Benoist’s performance as the character in CBS and The CW's Arrowverse series helped keep Kara Zor-El's name in the minds and hearts of fans through the years. But Sophie Campbell now has an opportunity to make her one of the most popular characters in comics. Because she’s writing and drawing the series, she’ll have more control over what her vision is. She will know what she wants and bring her thoughts to life.

Supergirl will be released on May 13, 2025, with variant covers by Bilquis Evely, W. Scott Forbes, Joshua Middleton, and Pablo Villalobos.
