The upcoming Supergirl movie is going to be a big challenge for James Gunn’s new DC Universe slate. The tale of the Girl of Steel (Milly Alcox) on her solo adventures has to overcome doubts to become a box office hit.

The film is written by Ana Nogueira, an actress with roles in The Vampire Diaries, Hightown, and The Blacklist as well as a playwright. It’s obviously a major boon for her career if Supergirl takes off, as Nogueira has already been tapped to write the scripts for the next Wonder Woman film and one based on the Teen Titans.

Speaking to Collider, Nogueira touched on her Wonder Woman script and how she knows how the eyes of fandom will be upon her.

“I mean, that I'm there will be a little like a sniper dot on my head if I say too much. But I will say that like from all of it, it's just I try to approach every character that I write from a place of what feels the most true to me about them. For Kara, it was like this backstory that she had. And I always try to come at it that way and like, you know, put on some blinders and see what the character means to me before I take them off onto the page.”

Nogueira does have big shoes to fill. 2017’s Wonder Woman was written by top comic book writer Allan Heinberg and directed by Patty Jenkins with Gal Gadot in the main role. It’s regularly hailed as probably the best of the DCEU films. Sadly, the hopes of a franchise died with the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, which had barely any theatrical release amid the COVID-19 pandemic and a divisive fan reaction.

So far, the question of Wonder Woman in Gunn’s DC Universe is up in the air. Rumors abound that Adria Arjona’s role in the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow isn’t Maxima but rather Diana. Also, Eva De Dominici sparked speculation that she might have been cast in some training videos.

Given she’s the most iconic female superhero of all time, Gunn wants to ensure Wonder Woman is done right. He clearly has faith in Nogueira with her other planned films and seems confident she can do justice to Diana. The writer being aware of the pressure is a sign she wants to do this right as well, and the fact that it’s a woman writing the screenplay is a good sign.

As with many projects in development, it’s hard to tell when we might see the DC Universe Wonder Woman. At least it sounds like the woman writing it seems ready to bring a new version of the Amazon warrior to the big screen.

Supergirl premieres in theaters June 26.
