The CW's Superman and Lois has consistently been one of the best superhero shows on television. I would go one further and say that it's one of the best superhero shows of all time, and there are plenty out there who would agree with me. Its "Friday Night Tights" approach to the iconic story of Superman and Lois Lane, focusing on their family dynamic with twin sons Jonathan and Jordan Kent as much as it does the superhero drama sets it apart from other shows in its field. It's one of a kind, and it is continuing to prove that in its final season.

The show just recently returned from a year-long hiatus to commence its fourth and final season. Its 10-episode count hasn't prevented it from tackling ambitious storytelling as the season is tackling the infamous The Death of Superman arc from the comics. Its third episode, "Always My Hero", hasn't slowed the momentum, offering up one of the biggest twists in the season yet - one that has a huge impact on the show's four-season run.

It's also one that viewers have been waiting a long time to see.

Jonathan Kent develops super powers in Superman and Lois season 4

After three seasons, Jonathan Kent has finally developed super powers in Superman and Lois. The game-changing moment took place in the third episode of season 4, "Always My Hero", during an argument he was having with his brother Jordan and how he was handling his super powers.

Jonathan voiced his frustration at Jordan, telling him that he is tired of hearing him complain about what a burden having super powers has been for him; also acknowledging how he has constantly chosen to ignore advice and do his own thing, which resulted in Lex destroying Clark's heart in the previous episode. However, the emotion, grief and rage overwhelmed Jonathan and, in that moment, he developed super powers.

The super hearing kicked in first, as Jonathan could hear sirens off in the distance and sounds he simply shouldn't be able to hear. Then came the X-ray vision, which he was able to use to see his bloody, battered, broken hand reset itself back to normal. And then Superman's own ship responded to his touch, acknowledging the presence of another Kryptonian. As Jordan pointed out, Jonathan Kent now had powers.

Soon afterwards, we learned that Jonathan's powers differed from his brother's, or at least the rate at which he developed him. While Jordan had begun exhibiting signs of Kryptonian powers from the beginning of the series before they slowly manifested in different ways, Jonathan developed them all at once. He also seemingly mastered them all at once, as he flew out of the Kent Farm to Smallville to Metropolis to New Carthage and back. And with that, he was ready to start training at the DOD to perfect his powers and, hopefully, help the Irons' and Jordan keep the world safe from Doomsday.

This is an incredible full-circle moment for Superman and Lois as fans have been wondering whether Jonathan would get powers since the show began. At the very start, Clark and Lois worried whether he would be the son who would develop abilities as he was naturally gifted at a lot of sports throughout his youth, but they soon learned that it was actually Jordan who had the powers. And yet, fans continued to wonder if Jonathan would ever pick them up too. Now is his time.

Superman and Lois was initially expected to run for seven seasons, so it would have been interesting to see if - and / or when - he would have developed powers had the show run that long, but either way, it's exciting to see him get to do so now. Michael Bishop did a wonderful job as Jon in this episode, and it feels right that the show gets to bow out with both of the Super Twins at the forefront of the Kent family.

Superman and Lois season 4 airs new episodes every Monday on The CW at 8/7c.
