Cancellations are a normal and expected part of the TV life cycle. No show can go on forever – well unless you’re The Simpsons maybe – and it’s inevitable that all shows will come to a close at some point.
That said, it’s far too common for some of the best shows to grace our screens to have their runs end abruptly and it’s incredibly frustrating as a fan when these decisions are not the result of anything the show has done wrong. In 2024, there were countless shows canceled across broadcast, cable, and streaming, and some of these cancellations were deserved or expected. However, there were just as many that have left us annoyed, bitter, and upset.
As 2024 draws to a close, let’s take a look back at the cancellations that we still haven’t gotten over this year beginning with the most puzzling cancellation on the superhero front, a show that very well could have run for several more seasons.
Superman & Lois
It goes without saying that Superman & Lois was truly peak TV when it comes to superhero content on broadcast. This show was pure perfection.
The show’s visuals and special effects were some of the best on broadcast TV (and really TV in general), the writing and pacing of its seasons were brilliant, and the show’s cast was absolutely phenomenal – especially its leads Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch, who helped us to fall in love with Clark Kent and Lois Lane all over again.
This is a show that very well could have gone on for several additional seasons and it’s a shame that the show came to a close due largely to the desire to bring Superman to the big screen and create a shared DC Universe. While we’re excited to see what James Gunn can bring with his Superman franchise, we’d be lying if we didn’t say Superman & Lois set the bar extremely high and we’re not sure if a new duo will be able to top the flawless and iconic performances of Hoechilin and Tulloch who cemented themselves as the best to ever take on the beloved characters with the show’s final season in 2024.
