You couldn't have asked for a better movie to kickstart the new iteration of the DCU than Superman. The Man of Steel soared higher than ever in an adventure that was filled with optimism, hope, and a little dose of punk rock. The best part? The Clark Kent's adventures are just getting started.
The very next project in the DCU, Peacemaker season 2, already featured a Superman cameo in the opening episode. This served to remind audiences that the hero can show up wherever there's trouble. Besides, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that he'll also show up in his cousin's standalone movie, Supergirl. But while supporting appearances are more than welcome, we are all wondering the same thing: Will the last son of Krypton ever get a sequel in the DCU? Well, we finally have an answer, and the best part is that we won't have to wait long to return to Metropolis.
Man of Tomorrow, a Superman sequel, will be released in 2027
Back in August, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn surprised the world by announcing that he was already working on a Superman follow-up, and teased that he hoped to go into production "not too far away from today". However, fans assumed the sequel was still a long way off, especially considering Gunn had just finished his work on the first entry of the saga and had also been working on Supergirl and Clayface as a producer. But lo and behold, Clark Kent's return to the big screen is not only a reality, but it will come sooner than expected.
James Gunn unveiled on social media that Man of Tomorrow is the next installment in the Superman saga, and that it will hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Furthermore, he also accompanied the reveal post with a picture of Superman next to Lex Luthor, who is equipped with his iconic Mech suit. While this image is just a small tease of what's to come, it does give us a hint at what the long-awaited sequel will offer in terms of story.
Superman was all about Lex Luthor trying to put a stop to the Man of Steel from the shadows. The infamous villain sent his twisted creations to physically fight Clark in the open streets of Metropolis while he controlled the whole operation from within a private room at Luthorcorp. Lex even sought the government's approval to kill Superman, ensuring that nobody could blame him for operating outside of the law. However, behind the scenes, he committed multiple crimes and almost provoked a full-on war between Boravia and Jarhanpur. Fortunately, all of Lex's schemes were exposed by the end of the movie, and he was taken to the maximum security prison, Belle Reve.
While Clark managed to save the day, he could've indirectly caused a much bigger problem in the long term. Lex doesn't need to hide his actions anymore. The whole world knows that he's a big threat, and the villain might embrace that concept going forward. He can now create a mech suit and directly fight Superman while the whole world watches, instead of sending his minions to do his bidding with the whole purpose of protecting his image. Lex's biggest weakness is no more, and he'll stop at nothing to see Metropolis free from Superman's "protection".
Man of Tomorrow could give us an even more unhinged and unstoppable version of Lex Luthor, which means Superman will have to be at the top of his game as well. Fortunately, we won't have to wait long to see how everything pans out, as the movie is less than two years away from hitting theaters.
Man of Tomorrow will be released on Jul. 9, 2027.
