It's been a long road to production for Matt Reeves' long-awaited sequel to The Batman. The original film arrived in movie theaters back in 2022 and it quickly became a resounding success story. Even so, the sophomore outing in Reeves' planned trilogy has had rough time getting off the ground, with delays aplenty.
But things are finally moving, with the Robert Pattinson-led sequel set to begin production in April for its planned October 2027 release date. And a new update has given fans the perfect tease for what to expect from it when it finally does release in movie theaters.
The Batman - Part II gets a perfect working title
Hollywood North Buzz has announced that the working title for The Batman - Part II is Vengeance 2. Needless to say, this has gone down extremely well with fans for a multitude of reasons. The first film operated under the working title of Vengeance, so it's pretty apt that Part II goes the straightforward sequel route here.
This is also a nod to the iconic line from the first movie in which Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight would repeatedly say to the criminals he beat up: "I'm Vengeance". It became so prominent on the streets of Gotham City that many of the people around him, including Catwoman and The Penguin, would actually refer to him as Vengeance.

So, yeah, Vengeance 2 is a pretty appropriate title for the movie, even if it will likely see him take a different path when it comes to heroism. After all, the first film concluded with the Caped Crusader seeing that there were other ways to be a hero to the city than inspiring fear. And he learned that lesson through The Riddler's co-opting of his movement, by having his goons use the phrase when they attacked. To counteract that, Batman shifted gears and decided that his approach to saving Gotham would be less about vigilantism and more about actually saving those in need. He could be a symbol of hope, not vengeance.
The film ended with The Dark Knight helping everyone caught in the flood caused by The Riddler, rescuing them from danger and taking them to the roof - where they were ultimately safe from harm. He stayed with the injured and protected them too, with the news outlets taking notice of his heroics. And with that, he embarked on a new chapter as Gotham's hero.
That's where the upcoming sequel will come in, as it's set to tell the middle chapter in Reeves' planned trilogy. Very little is known about the storyline as of yet, but it has added a host of stars to its line-up, including two major Marvel Cinematic Universe titans. Sebastian Stan joins the fray as Harvey Dent while Scarlett Johansson has also been cast in a mystery role. Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan are also expected to reprise their respective roles as The Penguin and The Joker.
After the success of the first movie - and HBO spinoff The Penguin - anticipation was already high for The Batman 2 over the past four years, but these new castings have multiplied that excitement tenfold. The confirmation of the working title is just the most recent exciting update in a long line of them. We can't wait to see it all come to life in the film.
