Back in March 2022, history was made when The Batman was released and quickly cemented itself as one of the best live-action adaptations featuring the Caped Crusader. That was no easy feat at all, especially considering all the fierce competition we've seen through the years. As such, fans were eager to dive deeper into the world that Matt Reeves crafted and discover what other twisted stories were awaiting to be told in Gotham's dark alleyways. But while The Penguin HBO Max series masterfully scratched a bit of that itch, what everyone is longing for is a proper sequel.

The Batman Part II was announced all the way back in Cinema-Con on Apr. 26, 2022. Initially, the movie was intended to premiere in October 2025, but it was later pushed back to Oct. 2, 2026, before landing its (hopefully) final release date of Oct. 1, 2027. As a two-year delay wasn't enough, fans were worried that the movie could take even more time in the oven.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios and announced the reboot of the interconnected universe, they also expressed their commitment to Matt Reeves' Batman franchise. Unfortunately, Gunn very recently revealed that he hadn't seen a finished script for The Batman Part II, while also urging fans to be patient. Many grew worried that the film could face yet another delay if the film's story wasn't ready in time. Fortunately, all our worries have finally gone away.

The Batman Part II script is ready

Yes! It's real, and it's finally ready to go. Matt Reeves posted a picture of The Batman Part II's script on social media, with co-writer Mattson Tomlin. While the image is blurred out, the bat logo is simply unmistakable, and you can also make out the "Part II" just below it. But does that mean that the script completely finished, or is this post merely meant to indicate it's being worked on? Well, Variety confirmed that the movie's story is finally ready to go. The news comes just after James Gunn confirmed that the screenplay would be turned in in June (so the assignment was barely done in time).

So, when would production for The Batman Part ll officially start? Well, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that the upcoming few weeks will be delegated to some slight re-writes, as James Gunn usually gives notes on the scripts he's handed (as was the case with Joker: Folie à Deux). Besides, it's heavily rumored that Bruce Wayne himself, Robert Pattinson, has been cast in Dune: Messiah, which is expected to begin filming this Summer. That would occupy his agenda for the upcoming months.

With that in mind, the earliest The Batman: Part ll could begin production would be late 2025, but early 2026 seems all the more likely. At the time being, very little is known about the movie's narrative. However, Matt Reeves did confirm that The Penguin finale would lead directly into the events of the long-awaited sequel. With that in mind, it isn't far-fetched to assume that the Selina Kyle and Sofia Falcone storyline will be explored more in-depth, as well as Oswald's new power status. Besides, a team-up between the Joker and the Riddler was teased at the end of the first film as well. But besides those few story arcs? There's still a lot left up in the air.

However, we do know that The Batman: Part II will still be a grounded movie that deviates from the often supernatural themes its titular hero and villains are known for in comic book pages. That's the reason why the upcoming Clayface horror movie will take place in the brand new DC Universe, as opposed to the "realistic" Elseworld Matt Reeves is crafting. Chances are that villains with "superpowers" or fantastical abilities, such as Ra's al Ghul or Poison Ivy, will be nowhere to be seen (or might be adapted with creative liberties, as was the former's case in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy).

But whatever ends up coming our way, it's exciting to know it's finally being worked on. The waiting has been excruciatingly long, but the gears are moving and they won't stop any time soon. And with a little bit of luck, DC will reveal more about The Batman Part II this year, ahead of next year's filming.

The Batman Part II will be released on Oct. 1, 2027.
