Season 2 of The Last of Us has officially concluded. What a season of TV it was, too. All of the game-changing events that transpired throughout these past seven episodes will drastically change every character going forward. That’s including Ellie, Dina, and some of the people who haven’t been seen since the journey to Seattle started.
But, before we even get into that, someone else has a story to tell. With that in mind, let's dive into the ending of the show's season 2 finale "Convergence".
*** WARNING! SPOILERS FOR THE SEASON 2 FINALE OF HBO'S THE LAST OF US! ***

The finale was a frustrating one for Ellie. As she and Jesse made their journey to save Tommy, she decided to break from the mission and go after Abby. Jesse left her knowing that following her could get him killed. Now that he has a kid coming, he had bigger priorities. Sadly, it was all for nothing, because Abby wasn’t where Nora had hinted.
When Ellie got to the aquarium, she found Owen and his partner, Mel. Abby shot Owen, and the bullet accidentally hit Mel, too. What viewers soon find out is that Mel was pregnant. Sadly, Mel died from blood loss, wondering if Ellie delivered her baby. She did not. Her baby died with its mother.
Soon after returning to their base, Ellie and Jesse heard a gunshot and rushed to Tommy. Jesse bust through the door and was immediately shot in the head. The camera panned over, and we see that Abby was the one holding the gun. Ellie pleaded for Tommy's life, but Abby didn't want to hear it; she had let Ellie live after killing Joel, and she still came after them. Then, the screen goes black and there’s a gunshot. But that isn’t the end.
The episodes ends as viewers are transported to the past and see Abby waking up in the library. She then walks to her room that overlooks the compound for the Washington Liberation Front (or WLF) compound. The last thing we see is the text saying "Day 1".

What Abby's story means for The Last of Us season 3
If you were wondering what happened to Abby after she killed Joel, you’re about to learn. The most important thing to know is that everything Abby goes through happens at the same time Ellie and Dina get to Seattle. That’s why the "Day 1" text is important.
There will be a lot of scenes in season 3 where things connect back to Ellie and Dina (directly and indirectly). For example, you may hear something like WLF communications saying things that relate to Dina and Ellie attacking or Nora being chased by Ellie. So, if you happen to go back and watch season 2 before season 3, know that Abby is getting into something as Ellie hunts her.

One more thing to note is that this entire season will follow Abby, Owen, and the rest of the WLF team. You’ll see that they aren’t what they appeared to be at the beginning of season 2 of The Last of Us. In a lot of ways, they’re similar to the people in Jackson, Wyoming. They just want to live their lives and love. However, you’ll also see that there are those among them who are clearly evil. Or, maybe they’re just misgudied.
You have over a year to prepare yourself to see things from a different perspective. You may not agree, but everything on this show isn't black and white. So, get ready to have your view of everything altered once again when season 3 of HBO's The Last of Us premieres.
