It turns out that we may be getting more of The Penguin after all, as the Batman spinoff could continue!

The Batman was a bold new take on the Caped Crusader when it debuted in 2022. Robert Pattinson offered an even darker Dark Knight, handling a string of serial killers, the twisted Riddler (Paul Dano). This was a Batman who made mistakes that led to a massive flooding of Gotham City.

While the sequel has been stalled by various delays and is not set to come out until 2027, we got more of this world via The Penguin. That had Colin Farrellreprising his role from the film as Oz Cobblepot, who rises from low-level thug to mob boss.

The show was a major success with an impressive 24 nominations. Sadly, the show was up against the juggernaut of Netflix’s acclaimed drama Adolescence, which ended up claiming the major Limited Series awards in Outstanding Limited Series, writing and three of the acting awards.

Thankfully, the show did score one big win: Cristin Milioti taking Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her acclaimed role as Sofia Falcone. Reeves had already stated that there were no plans to use Sofia in Batman II. The series had been billed as a limited series only, and that seemed the end of it. However, there’s a chance it could continue!

Matt Reeves offers the most promising update about The Penguin season 2 yet

Speaking to Variety at an Emmys afterparty, Matt Reeves gave an update for The Batman II as he hopes to finally start filming in the spring of 2026. He also said the script remains under “lock and key” to put down various rumors, such as Robin appearing.

Reeves also talked of The Penguin and how there hadn’t been plans to continue the show, but its massive success is making them reconsider.

“We’re in discussions. [Showrunner] Lauren [Lefranc] is thinking hard and we’re talking, so we’ll see. We love the show, and we think our cast is so incredible. The work that Lauren and the writers did was incredible. Our passion was in it, but never in our wildest dreams could we imagine it would have been received in the way that it was.”

Reeves also clarified that the key reason Sofia wasn't in the plans for The Batman II was that the script was written before her breakout turn but would love to work with her again.

This wouldn’t be the first time a show initially planned for only one season ended up becoming a regular series. The finale did leave a lot open with Oz becoming a full mob boss ready to take on Gotham. Meanwhile, having been framed for Oz’s crimes and put in Arkham Asylum, Sofia got a letter from her long-lost half-sister, Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz).

That is great material for a second season with Oz consolidating his power and perhaps facing off against some other famous Batman villains. Meanwhile, Sofia could break out of her prison and perhaps team up with Selina to take Oz down in a major fight.

That promises an expansion into the world of these films, something fans would love. It’s still up in the air, depending on schedules, but seeing The Penguin continue would be a great boon for Batman fans and offer a further journey into this dark world.
