Nearly a decade after the release of Netflix's The Punisher Season 2, Frank Castle is finally the star of his own standalone project thanks to the release of The Punisher: One Last Kill. Everyone's favorite antihero is back, and he's more violent than ever before. Better yet, this is just the beginning of a new chapter in his life set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After appearing in the most gruesome and relentless special presentation ever, the Punisher will switch gears and have a role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day—a project expected to be more lighthearted and optimistic than Frank Castle's usual adventures. So how are the two MCU projects connected, and what is the Punisher's role in all of this? Well, the answers could be hiding in plain sight during the ending of the latest Disney+ release.

Frank Castle's new purpose after The Punisher: One Last Kill could lead him to be Jean Grey's protector in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Since his debut in the second season of Netflix's Daredevil, Frank Castle's purpose has been pretty straightforward: get revenge on every single person involved in the killing of his family. We've seen him cross names off his list throughout multiple projects, and the culmination of years of effort finally paid off during The Punisher: One Last Kill.

After killing the last remaining members of the Gnucci family, Frank's work is finally done. Everyone who wronged his family is no more, so what follows next? Well, The Punisher: One Last Kill is all about Frank finding a new sense of purpose that goes beyond revenge. Throughout the final minutes of the Disney Plus Special Presentation, we see the iconic antihero aid others he doesn't even know, which is a striking contrast to the very beginning when he sees many crimes happening around him and doesn't care to get involved.

Make no mistake, the Punisher still kills in very creative and violent ways. However, he is now a protector to those who can't defend themselves, and that's where Spider-Man: Brand New Day is likely to come in.

It has been reported that Frank Castle's role in the wall-crawler's upcoming film will be to keep a young Jean Grey safe from the Department of Damage Control. After all, the shady federal organization is hunting everyone with "dangerous" superpowers, as revealed by the events of Wonder Man. More likely than not, the DoDC is hunting mutants.

Jean Grey is widely considered to be the most powerful X-Men ever created, so why would she need help from someone like Frank? Well, it is rumored that she won't have complete control of her superpowers just yet. With that in mind, there's a chance that Brand New Day could slightly mirror the events of the second season of Netflix's The Punisher, where Frank helps a young woman, Amy Bendix, escape assassins hired by a corrupt senator. Say what you will about Frank, but he has a heart somewhere beneath all the weapons he's usually carrying.

It hasn't been officially confirmed whether Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, this is a bit of an open secret at this point. So, it will be interesting to see how she's introduced in the MCU and what her relationship with Peter Parker will be like. But one thing is for certain: the Punisher's renewed sense of purpose will influence the character's portrayal in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And who knows? Maybe we will even see this version of the antihero in other projects like Daredevil: Born Again Season 3.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released on Jul. 31, 2026.
