Godzilla’s long-awaited return to the Marvel Universe is now upon us, with Godzilla vs. Thor now available in stores. The one-shot comic is arriving just before the upcoming Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe five-issue event series, making it a fun appetizer which will leave fans hungry for more. And the promise of a battle between Thor and Godzilla will no doubt leave fans bursting with excitement.

Godzilla vs. Thor was written by Jason Aaron, who is known for his work on Wolverine, The Punisher, Star Wars, and The Avengers, with Daredevil’s Aaron Kuder providing the artwork. Kuder also provided the standard cover, with variant covers drawn by Mark Bagley, Walt Simonson, Gavin Guidry, and Nick Bradshaw.

The one-shot focuses on Thor attempting to stop Godzilla after The Hand bestows the giant lizard with the power of an ancient demonic force. Thor stands as the only line of defence between Midgard and Godzilla’s wrath, and the ensuing battle between the God of Thunder and the King of the Monsters will no doubt be suitably epic. And longtime fans may remember that, despite the obvious size difference, Godzilla and Thor appeared to be evenly matched as they played tug of war with the Empire State Building all the way back in Marvel’s Godzilla #24 from 1979, so it really will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this new story.

In a statement provided to Marvel.com, Aaron explained that he used the incarnation of Godzilla from the 2001 film Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, which was one of the darkest Godzilla films since the 1954 original. And Aaron also explained that he is a huge Godzilla fan, which explains why he jumped at the opportunity to write a story featuring everyone’s favorite radioactive lizard. You can read Aaron’s full quote below:

"There are almost as many toy kaiju in my office as there are Mjolnirs, which is really saying something, so it made sense for me to bring two of my favorite characters together for one titanic clash... Aaron Kuder and I are using the Godzilla from Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, one of the most brutal and powerful versions of the King of the Monsters, so expect a colossal battle that I think will rival some of the most epic, cosmic throwdowns I've ever written with the God of Thunder."

That tease really is saying something as the Odinson has faced off against some truly incredible forces throughout his iconic Marvel Comics (and indeed Marvel Cinematic Universe) history. The idea of seeing him cross paths with the King of the Monsters is just something else.

If you would like to experience the epic battle between Thor and Godzilla for yourselves, you can now purchase Godzilla vs. Thor from Marvel.com, Amazon, and anywhere else where comics are sold.
