Thunderbolts*: 5 great and brutal moments from The Sentry in Marvel Comics

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* will debut one of the most terrifying characters, Bob Reynolds, The Sentry/Void. These five Marvel Comics moments will show why everyone is afraid of him.

In the pages of Marvel Comics, the President of the United States once asked his staff how powerful Sentry was. He was told that his power levels were incalculable. Captain America asked Norman Osborn how to stop him, and Osborn said, “You can’t. He’s the angel of death.” Both seemed true, and that’s why 90% of the people in Marvel Comics were terrified of him.

With Bob making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Thunderbolts*, it seemed like a good time to bring up his five greatest comic book feats. He’s knocked out Wolverine, taken Spider-Woman’s venom blast to the face without flinching, and flies Carnage into space and tears him in half. Those pale in comparison to the five moments you’re about to read.

Writer's note. There is a difference between Sentry, Bob, and The Void. For the sake of the article not getting confusing, he will mostly be referred to as Sentry or Bob.

1-on-1 with the Hulk

Comic book: World War Hulk No. 5

There’s only a handful of meta-humans that can go blow-for-blow with the Hulk, and Sentry is one of them. In this fight, Sentry unleashed the power of a million exploding suns on the most powerful Hulk ever seen, the World Breaker.

The Sentry still lost, but barely. It took everything the Hulk had to win because the Sentry wasn't holding back. It's the first and maybe last time that happened. I think it’s time for the two to have a rematch.

Sentry rips Dr. Doom's mask off

Comic book: Mighty Avengers No. 11

No one embarrasses Victor von Doom by revealing his face and lives to tell the tale. No one except Sentry, that is. And it wasn’t a desperate attempt to distract the Lord of Latveria. He grabbed Von Doom by his chest plate and mask and pulled them off him, revealing his scarred body. All Doom could do was stand in disbelief and surrender to the Avengers.

It’s easily one of Sentry's best moments. Considering that Doom embarrassed him in the previous issue, it was deserved payback.

That time he kills Ares

Comic book: Siege No. 2

When the fight between Sentry and Ares started, I thought this was going to be one of the best battles of the year. It was the God of War vs an unleashed Sentry. It ended up being a slaughter.

Ares landed a couple of hits that didn’t seem to hurt, and was then ripped in half. And not metaphorically. Ares was pulled apart like a wishbone.

Sentry threatens Thor...

Comic book: Siege No. 3

Right after killing Ares, Norman Osborn sent Bob after Thor. When he confronted the God of Thunder, he asked, “How many gods will I have to kill today?” Thor knew that he had to hit his foe with everything he had… and it barely moved him.

No matter what the Odinson did, Sentry kept coming. There was even a moment when Thor looked terrified. Fun fact: the readers were scared, too. Sadly, in the next issue, we get the answer to how many gods he'd have to kill.

Then kills Loki

Comic book: Siege No. 4

Loki may not be as big and strong as Ares or Thor, but he’s still a crafty, creative god. The Hulk, Thor, and others have tried to kill him, and he's managed to escape with magic, his silver tongue, or his tricks. Unfortunately, none of that would have worked anyway.

There was no stopping Bob in his most dangerous form. Sentry tore the God of Mischief in two as easily as he did the Greek God of War. That’s two gods dead in less than an hour. Can anyone name a villain who's done anything that impressive? It’s doubtful.
