Excessive violence might be what most know Injustice for but that isn't all there is to to this alternate universe of the DC Comics lore. In fact, the comic book series itself includes plenty of emotional depth, with multiple moments that also reveal a softer side to Injustice: Gods Among Us and even Injustice 2. Here many of the same characters exchanging blows, also exchange words, even a kindness or two, as war breaks out between two major factions: Batman and Superman's teams.

With all of that in mind, let's now take a look at four moments that explore this softer side of Injustice and highlight the duality of this story.

Superman learns that Lois Lane is Pregnant

One of the first heartfelt moments from Injustice occurs during the opening pages of the story when Superman discovers that his wife, Lois Lane, is pregnant. Using his super-hearing by accident, he hears his unborn child’s heartbeat, leading to a tender scene between him and Lois.

It is a beautiful moment that feels quite tragic in hindsight considering what is to come, and it represents the significance placed on Superman’s heart, especially after it is finally broken. Some could even say, for that reason, that it was this very moment that was the calm before the storm.

Black Canary gives Birth

The next heartfelt moment is, itself, a calm before the storm, a small glimmer of joy, even, when Black Canary gives birth. Although she suffers the loss of her husband and father to her child, Green Arrow, it is with her son’s arrival that she’s able to nevertheless keep at least some hope alive for herself.

Arrow isn’t all but gone, either, as despite the life with him being stolen from Canary by Superman, her son’s entrance means Oliver Queen remains alive somehow in their son. A light in the darkness, indeed.

Plastic Man and his Son

Another bright spot from the overall Injustice series is one that explores the relationship between Plastic-Man and his son, Luke. Here, Plastic-Man manages to redeem himself as a father by rescuing Luke, allowing old wounds between them to finally heal. Then, during Injustice 2, Luke appears to trust his father again as the two make up for lost time by fighting crime together.

It’s a rarity of joy that stands out here as they are two of the characters who get a genuinely happy ending. Others aren’t so lucky.

Superman's Dream

Now speaking of inauthentic happy endings, here is the final entry: Superman’s dream. In this bittersweet moment, Superman falls under a spell that lets him witness the life that The Joker stole from him - a life where he becomes a father and watches his daughter grow up to become a hero.

It’s a beautiful, albeit tragic, glimpse of the family that he longed for, seeing he is the last of his kind. The sweetness cuts deep, really, and it is because of that, alone, that this moment deserves this number one slot.
