It is no secret that Spider-Man is the most popular and beloved hero Marvel has ever created. As such, audiences worldwide have seen three iterations of the character swing onto the big screen, and each one of them has sported many different suits.
Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker sported four different looks. He started with a homemade wrestling costume before moving on to his iconic red-and-blue suit, which was slightly tweaked between his first and second films. To cap things off, he later bonded with an alien symbiote, resulting in the hero's most menacing design on the big screen. Andrew Garfield also started with a homemade vigilante costume, and then had a major suit upgrade between his first and second movies. Tom Holland's version of the character... well, he has had many different looks over the years.
In total, audiences have seen 15 different Spider-Man live-action costumes to this date, and the very best one may be yet to come. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is just around the corner, and it is set to bring the character back to his roots. As such, a new design will also accompany this new installment, and fans are already agreeing that this is the best the wall-crawler has looked on the big screen. Now, Tom Holland has opened up about the highly acclaimed change.

The new Spider-Man costume will be inspired by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men
In a new Spider-Man: Brand New Day featurette, Tom Holland and director Destin Daniel Cretton talk about the wall-crawler's new suit and reveal that it is designed to pay homage to the looks of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men. After all, these three heroes met in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The inspirations are more than apparent. Tom's new suit has a hexagon-like pattern that is reminiscent of Tobey Maguire's superhero look. Furthermore, the raised webbing pattern is very similar to that of Andrew Garfield's costume. But despite these parallels, the new design also paves its own way and stands out from the hero's other suits.
Another important detail to highlight is that Tom Holland and Destin Daniel Cretton really wanted the new costume to feel real and "tactile." After all, fans have complained about the over-reliance on CGI to bring Tom's Spider-Man to life in previous movies. The hero's other suits were way too smooth, without any wrinkles or imperfections. This pursuit for perfection resulted in an unrealistic look that sometimes stood out for all the wrong reasons.
To change this, Destin stated that Brand New Day will "embrace the folds and the wrinkles" of the new costume, so that whenever Peter moves, it looks like he has real "material" over him. Furthermore, Tom revealed that Peter will go back to his roots of being a "dumpster diver kid who's retrofitting old tech" for his own purposes.
It has been reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will open things up with a montage sequence that will showcase the wall-crawler fighting multiple villains since the end of No Way Home. With each passing battle, Peter will tweak and improve his suit to be better prepared for future fights. The final result will be the one we'll see throughout most of the film's runtime. As such, there will be a clear narrative motive behind why the wall-crawler will look the way he does.
Fans have pointed out that Tom's eyes are visible through the Spider-Man lenses and that we can actually see his mouth move through the mask. The result is one of the most realistic looks the wall-crawler has ever sported in live action, bringing the Spider-Man fantasy to life in a way that hasn't been accomplished before. Fortunately, it won't be long before we get to see more of the new chapter in the friendly neighborhood hero's life
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released on Jul. 31, 2026.
