Nearly five years ago, we witnessed how the wall-crawler saved the multiverse as a whole... after nearly destroying it in the first place. When Spider-Man: No Way Home first premiered, few could've imagined that we wouldn't see the friendly neighborhood hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for nearly half a decade. But after years of theorizing about when we'd see him next, Peter is bound to start a brand new chapter in his life soon.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally upon us, yet there's still a lot we don't know about it. The movie's main villain remains under wraps, Sadie Sink's character is still a mystery (even if all signs point toward her portraying Jean Grey), and fans are convinced the official trailer is hiding big MCU characters in plain sight. As such, any tidbit that gives us a better idea of what to expect is welcome, and Tom Holland gave us exactly that.
While it is common for any major MCU production to undergo reshoots, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is doing so for a very unique reason.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day reshoots serve to add more humor and layer a villain plotline in a new way
During an interview with GQ, Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland revealed the reasons the upcoming project needed additional photography:
"The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor. We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff."
Perhaps the most interesting tidbit is that one of the objectives of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day reshoots is to add more humor into the mix. While the film's official trailer had some comedic scenes (such as when Spidey literally slaps the Punisher out of his van), it's impossible to deny that this new chapter feels a bit more mature, dramatic, and dark.

The web-slinger is, perhaps, at the lowest point of his life. No one remembers he ever existed, which means he now has to watch as his former best friends build a life without him. Furthermore, he lost the only family he had left in Aunt May, forcing him to move to a small apartment all on his own. To make matters more complicated, no shortage of villains are about to terrorize New York City, including Scorpion, Tombstone, The Hand, Boomerang, Tarantula, and more.
It makes sense for Spider-Man: Brand New Day to feature a darker tone than previous entries in the saga. However, it's common to associate the wall-crawler with bright and optimistic stories, despite the countless tragedies that unfold in his life. As such, the new comedic scenes can be used to add a bit of levity to what is otherwise shaping up to be a dramatic movie. As long as Marvel doesn't overplay this card as it did with Thor: Love and Thunder, we'll be fine.
Another key detail to highlight from Tom's comments is that the reshoots will layer a "villain's plotline" in a new way. The fact that no specific names were dropped could suggest that there's yet another bad guy waiting to be revealed who hasn't been part of any official cast announcements or marketing material yet.
Granted, there's a chance that Tom is simply referring to Tombstone, given that the mob boss hasn't technically been named-dropped by Marvel itself yet. However, reports indicate that bad guys like 8-ball, the Jackal, and the Enforcers will appear in the movie, so Tom could also be talking about any one of them as well.
With a bit of luck, we'll know more about the main villain of Spider-Man: Brand New Day before the film's release. But regardless of the case, we don't have to wait long to find out what Marvel has in store for us.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released on July 31, 2026.
