The remake of The Toxic Avenger will receive its UK premiere at FrightFest at the ODEON Luxe in London’s Leicester Square on August 22, so fans who have been eagerly awaiting the remake do not have long to wait before catching it for themselves. As attendees will be aware, FrightFest is the UK’s largest and most prestigious horror festival. Running since 2000, the festival offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere for horror fans and creators to meet and interact over the course of five days, and attendees will tell you that all self-respecting horror fans absolutely need to attend FrightFest.
The comedic film stars Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, who transforms into the superhero known as the Toxic Avenger after falling into a vat of acid, with Luisa Guerreiro playing the deformed hero, with Dinklage providing the character’s voice after the transformation. And the plot focuses on Toxie (as he comes to be known) attempting to put a stop to crime and corruption in his local area, no doubt encountering many formidable foes along the way. The supporting includes Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Sarah Niles, Julia Davis, and Rebecca O'Mara. And writer and director Macon Blair previously helmed I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, in addition to writing Avengers Classic comics for Marvel.
Fans have waited a while for the remake of The Toxic Avenger. The film had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Texas all the way back in 2023, so it has been quite a while since it was first shown to the public, although the response from the screenings was largely positive. And while it played at various other festivals that same year, there were reports that it may not receive a general release due to its level of graphic violence, which seemed like an utterly absurd reason to shelve a completed film. Thankfully, the fears of it not being released were soon put to rest, as The Toxic Avenger has now been confirmed for a US nationwide theatrical release on August 29, 2025, thanks to distributors Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing.
The original 1984 Toxic Avenger film was co-directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman, who also founded Troma, the film’s distribution company which specializes in proudly low-budget fare. After the film’s release, it was followed by three live-action sequels, with the fourth film, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, being narrated by Stan Lee. Marvel also published a Toxic Avenger comic in the early 1990s, which lasted for eleven issues. Therefore, Marvel fans should absolutely be looking forward to catching The Toxic Avenger at FrightFest next month.
