This was one of the best weeks for new comic books in quite some time. While Image Comics seemed to have the best new reads this week, Marvel, DC, and Dynamite all had releases that were must-reads, with stories ranging from incredibly funny to so sad that they could leave you in tears.
With so many great issues, it can make knowing which ones to read all the more difficult. But that's what we're here for! So, with that in mind, here are the best new comic books of the week.
Let's start with the greatest of them all.
The Power Fantasy No. 11 (best of the week)
- Writer: Kieron Gillen
- Artist: Caspar Wijngaard
The Power Fantasy keeps hitting readers with emotionally charged moments, tons of suspense, and perfect art. And while this remains one of the best three comics around, this issue was special.
I couldn’t believe where Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wijngaard were going with this story until it happened. Even after seeing what happened, you're left with more questions than you came in with.
Bug Wars No. 6
- Writer: Jason Aaron
- Artist: Mahmud Asrar
- Colorist: Matthew Wilson
Book 1 of Bug Wars ends with a somewhat happy ending and a heck of a cliffhanger. Jason Aaron uses his iconic way with words to describe the brutality that Mahmud Asrar and Matthew Wilson showed with their art. It was a flawless way to end the first part of this story and get readers excited for what’s next.
Blood and Thunder No. 4
- Writer: Benito Cereno
- Artist: E.J. Su
- Colorist: Michele Msassyk Assarasakorn
While this particular issue of Blood and Thunder lacked some of the action that it can be known for, it made up for it with thoughtful, gripping storytelling. Readers get to see just how deplorable the people in this universe are, which really makes you think.. This furthers the series in ways that will be revealed later.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man No. 36
- Writer: Cody Ziglar
- Artist: Marco Renna
- Colorist: Bryan Valenza
With all of the action in this current arc of Miles Morales: Spider-Man, I didn’t believe that the creative team could end this with something better. I was wrong. The final battle between Ares was full of creative attacks and hilarious quips, but there was more to it than that. We’re reminded that Miles Morales’ ability to help goes further than his superpowers.

Captain Planet No. 3
- Writer: David Pepose
- Artist: Emmanuel Casallos
- Colorist: Jorge Sutil
Captain Planet No. 3 marked the first time we got to see the Planeteers in action, and they didn’t disappoint. It wasn’t the result of the fight that did it. It was a great example of their personalities. Plus, at the end of the issue, there’s a cliffhanger that’ll get you pumped for issue No. 4.

Daredevil No. 24
- Writer: Saladin Ahmed
- Artist: Jose Luis
- Colorist: Jesus Aburtov
After someone is brutally murdered, Daredevils Matt Murdock and Elektra search for the killer. Their journey leads them to the Bar With No Name and a fight with the god-powered Wrecker in a battle that proves how good they are. However, as good as the fight was, the ending of this issue was the best part. No spoilers!
I Was A Fashion School Serial Killer
- Writer: Doug Wagner
- Artist: Daniel Hillyard
- Colorist: Michelle Madsen
Doug Wagner gave a very satisfying ending to this mini-series, while Daniel Hillyard and Michelle Madsen drew some of the best action sequences of the year. While this is the end, I hope this is only the beginning for Rennie. She's an interesting character.
Transformers No. 23
- Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
- Artist: Jorge Corona
- Colorist: Mike Spicer
I got emotional reading this comic book because there was a moment where things looked hopeless. Then, out of nowhere, you’re given a reason to believe. It was a perfect penultimate issue to a legendary run by Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona.

Supergirl No. 4
- Writer: Sophie Campbell
- Artist: Sophie Campbell
- Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain
For me, this Supergirl series has been all about how our self-doubts negatively affect us. In this case, we have a Kandorian named Lesla-Lar who just wants to be a hero. In Supergirl No. 4, Lesla-Lar discovers that part of being a hero is learning from our mistakes, moving forward, and focusing on doing better. With this lesson, she can continue her journey of being a superhero.
Space Ghost Vol. 2, No. 1
- Writer: David Pepose
- Artist: Jonathan Lau
- Colorist: Andrew Dalhouse
Yes, there is a ton of action in this Space Ghost issue, but that was secondary. The important part came from Jan and Jace, who broke down why Dax was more important to them than his alter ego, Space Ghost. It was a reminder that this comic book goes deeper than fighting in space.
