As Marvel Comics’ Ultimate Universe keeps on rolling, the stories continue to get better with the reveal of missing characters. Clint Barton refused to take up the Hawkeye mantle, Carol Danvers exploded, and Namor was killed (this can all be seen in Deniz Camp's Ultimates). Because the X-Men are such a tight-knit group, their non-involvement has been obvious. Thankfully, he unaccounted-for mutant heroes and villains are being mentioned in Ultimate Wolverine.

So far, readers know that Nightcrawler, Hank McCoy, Gambit, and Kitty Pryde are part of the resistance fighting back against the leaders of the Eurasian Republic (Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red). As of now, it’s unclear where the original X-Men like Scott Summers (Cyclops), Warren Worthington the third, and Bobby Drake (Iceman) are. However, Ultimate Wolverine No. 4 explains what happened to omega-level mutants Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Jean Grey.

When the Maker recreated the universe in his image (Ultimate Invasion), he personally made sure to take out the heroes he knew would be a problem. A simple changing of an equation killed the Fantastic Four after they came back from space (Ultimates No. 4), and stopping a spider bite prevented Peter Parker from becoming Spider-Man (Ultimate Invasion No. 1). With Wolverine, he killed the scientist who originally put the adamantium on Logan's bones. This leads to Logan becoming the Winter Soldier of the Ultimate Universe (Universe-6160).

"Due to her inactivity, her muscles have atrophied to such an extent that it renders her body useless. Even if she, this all-powerful figure, did break free from the Cerebellum, how could she escape when her legs would surely not carry her?"

Thanks to a brilliant idea by the Ultimate Wolverine creative team, the end of each issue explains where certain characters are. In this case, Jean Grey is being used to mind-control people with the help of Charles Xavier’s brain (which was removed after he was killed). Since the scientists are aware that they can't give Jean any freedom, she's been fed and hydrated manually. She's also been inactive for so long that her body is rendered useless due to atrophy.

Jean’s been labeled the Phoenix Specimen due to her latent abilities and possible extraterrestrial possession. Despite knowing that and how powerful she is, the scientists still treat her as if she’s useless. And while this isn’t Earth-Prime Marvel Comics, Jean is still dangerous and will likely be the reason Logan is set free. He’s already started rebelling, and being brought to the one person who calms him seems like a recipe for disaster. The villains will hate to see it, but the fans will love it.

Not much is mentioned about Erik, but he’s referred to as the Magneto Specimen. It’s also said that together, he and Charles Xavier could have "controlled the world," and their powers seemed "boundless and beyond imagination." After seeing the arrogance of the Eurasian Republic, it wouldn’t be shocking if their inability to properly dispose of Xavier’s brain and likely not killing Magneto will come back to bite them in the butt.
