What you need to know

Considered the conclusion of a trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class, Apocalypse should be the end for McAvoy, Fassbender and Lawrence but the beginning for a new wave of younger actors playing mutant heroes made famous by others in Singer’s first go-round with the franchise.

The stakes are higher than ever this time, as their enemy is Apocalypse, the world’s first mutant, and a practically immortal source of evil. His goal is nothing less than global conquest for mutants, meaning the X-Men will have to rally together to protect a world that fears and hates them. You know, sort of like the classic comics. Apocalypse will also turn some mutants to his side, possibly against their will, to serve as his Four Horsemen.

Fox got a nice gift in that Isaac is coming off his turn as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but much will rest on the shoulders of the newcomers. Assuming they survive Apocalypse, the X-Men could be well positioned for continue movie success if this film is a hit, and since that seems likely, anyone hoping Marvel would get the movie rights to its mutant heroes back is probably going to have to keep waiting.

As the icing on the cake, look for a bald Professor X at some point in the film. It wouldn’t be right for McAvoy to leave the franchise without doing that.
