What you need to know

Can bad guys be a force for good? That was the premise of the Suicide Squad comic book series that first grabbed readers in the late 80s, and it’s proven a popular enough concept that DC has returned to it repeatedly since then. If the government has a mission where it needs expendable agents and plausible deniability, why not send supervillains? It works out well until it doesn’t, especially when the villains decide to change the equation and try to defeat their safeguards …

The comic succeeded in turning B and C-list villains into fan favorites, and while that still might happen here, Warner Bros. is hedging its bets by including big stars like Smith and hot acting talent like Davis. The Joker is also in the movie despite never joining the team in print, and even though fans have been split on his tattooed appearance, Leto reportedly stayed in character throughout the shoot and is set to add another unique portrayal to the character’s stellar movie history.

Between all of that, the buzz that Ayer has coming off of fury and a reported appearance by Ben Affleck’s Batman that will cement the film as part of the DC Extended Universe, Suicide Squad should hopefully have enough going for it to hook fans of the source material and the general public as well. Warner really needs that to happen to prove there is a market for DC movies other than Batman and Superman.
