What you need to know

Get ready to experience a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Marvel’s movies gradually moving from something just a step removed from reality to all-out comic book craziness, Doctor Strange should accelerate the process by exploring magic and mysticism. Despite the inherent challenges, the studio seems committed to letting the Doctor go nuts with his visually impressive spells and enchantments, and concept art shown so far has promised his familiar artifacts, the Sanctum Sanctorum and glimpses of other dimensions.

The incredible cast is also a plus, as is Derrickson’s background with the macabre. There’s also a lot we still don’t know, including who the Big Bad will be, since Ejiofor’s Mordo is being described as more of a morally ambiguous character.

And while Marvel has taken great pains to explain that this won’t be a typical origin story film, there should still be elements of Strange’s comic book origin included, which is good since it’s one of the best around. This might be the most obscure Marvel character to get a solo movie so far, but the guess here is that you’re going to want to see it.
