The Marvel Cinematic Universe is rapidly approaching the end of its ongoing Multiversal Saga, which means two new Avengers movies are upon us. Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has come and gone, only one project separates us from witnessing Doctor Doom's inevitable arrival, and that is VisionQuest.
The upcoming Disney+ series will act as the culmination of the ongoing WandaVision trilogy—a heartbreaking tale that began when Wanda lost her husband, Vision, and will end with the android's unexpected rebirth. Next month, we'll see the hero's long-awaited return to the MCU, and the best part is that he won't be on his own.
Other artificial intelligences that have appeared throughout the history of the MCU will also come back in human form. Ultron is, undeniably, among the biggest stars of the show. However, there is one specific AI that will have an arc worthy of the themes of grief and loss explored in WandaVision. It's time to brace ourselves for impact, because VisionQuest will re-explore one of the most heartbreaking superhero moments in a new light.
Audiences will witness F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s POV as Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame
"What's that like for an AI to not be able to protect the one they're programmed to protect?" That's the question VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas posed in the latest issue of SFX Magazine. After Tony Stark used the Infinity Stones to turn Thanos and his army into dust in Avengers: Endgame, he was on the brink of death. But before the Armored Avenger passed, there was still enough time for Pepper Potts to ask Tony's digital assistant, F.R.I.D.A.Y., what his status was, to which the AI simply replied: "Life functions critical."
In that split second, F.R.I.D.A.Y. could have computed thousands of possibilities, trying to find a way for Iron Man to survive. Instead, she couldn't help but watch her creator meet his end. If that idea alone wasn't tragic enough, we'll witness exactly how that moment panned out from the AI's point of view in VisionQuest.
It's likely that Tony's death will be a crucial part of F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s arc in the upcoming Disney+ series, and this storyline could also introduce the perfect opportunity for Vision to connect with the memories of his former self. After all, the iconic android was also engineered by Iron Man, in collaboration with Bruce Banner and even Ultron. Nearly all of these characters are likely to mourn the loss of the one who created them in the first place.
In a similar manner, VisionQuest will also explore the psyche of the other AIs in detail. Matalas revealed that a big part of the show will be discovering how these digital beings will react to having a human form, with some not being too keen on the idea:
"I guess the question is, are they corporeal? Or are they digital? Are they avatars? Can they be corporeal? Do some characters want to be corporeal? Some definitely do not. But that's a question that the pilot will very quickly answer."
Perhaps the biggest question in store is: Why will these AIs suddenly have human forms, and why are they all living in a surreal white mansion? After Marvel released the first VisionQuest trailer, it also revealed that Vision will search for new meaning by consulting "the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron." That means most of the events of the show will take place in the android's mind, explaining why impossible scenarios will unfold.
Just like WandaVision explored the traumatic events the Scarlet Witch endured throughout most of her life, it's likely that VisionQuest will do something similar with its titular character. On the bright side, Vision won't have to go through this process alone, as it has been confirmed that his son, Tommy Maximoff, will also have a role to play. Better yet, it won't be long before we discover which other surprises lie in store.
