Back in March 2024, a trailer of Insomniac's canceled multiplayer Spider-Man game called The Great Web was leaked, and it quickly took the world by storm. As if the prospect of saving the world as the one and only wall-crawler wasn't enough, players could join forces with their friends to travel across the multiverse, join in seasonal events, and put a stop to the Sinister Six and their mischievous plans.
Miguel O'Hara, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Silk, and more characters from every corner of the Spider-Man universe would have been playable. Furthermore, fan-favorites such as the Green Goblin, Madame Web, and even Morlun were set to make an appearance. Players are usually very cautious whenever a single-player video game saga gets the live-service treatment. However, fans of the web-slinger agreed that The Great Web seemed like a fun idea with unlimited potential.
Unfortunately, Insomniac decided to pull the plug on the project altogether. But while the game might never see the light of day, it doesn't mean we will never get a taste of what it's like to swing across New York's skyline with friends right by our side.
Spider-Man: Remastered gets a multiplayer PC mod
Leave it up to fans to create what once seemed impossible. A group of dedicated players took it upon themselves to create a multiplayer mod for Spider-Man: Remastered on PC, and the Patreon Beta was officially launched on August 25. While it's not a finalized version and some bugs are likely to occur, the results are nothing short of spectacular (as you can see in the video below).

For the time being, the multiplayer mod isn't supported on the campaign missions, side quests, DLC missions, or the randomized crimes that occur in the open world. However, online free roam is available, and you can take on enemy camps and hideouts with your friends. Furthermore, there will be new features added down the line, such as an emote menu and a lobby browser. There will be public and private lobbies that support up to 16 players at the same time.
While The Great Web might be no more, it lives on through passion projects like these. Throughout the history of Spider-Man-centric games, we've never seen a game that supports online multiplayer. The closest we ever got to that was the local co-op mode of Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, which lacked an open world map as the game featured linear levels instead, delivering a very different experience from that of Marvel's Spider-Man. With that in mind, let's hope that we eventually see more features added to the PC mod until it evolves into a must-play for every Spidey fan.
Insomniac Games might be aware of the positive response to an online Spider-Man game. So, even if they don't develop an entire multiplayer title with fully fleshed-out mechanics to achieve that mission, perhaps they could include a much simpler online co-op mode in Marvel's Spider-Man 3. After all, a similar scenario happened with Uncharted. While the Naughty Dog saga is known for being a single-player experience first, it had fun online modes that added a lot of replay value once you finished the main campaign.
Fortunately, a multiplayer Spider-Man experience is finally here, regardless of Insomniac's plans for its beloved superhero saga in the future. So, let's hope that it becomes everything that The Great Web could've been with a bit more time.
