It looks like X-Men ‘97 season 2 is going to be dividing up our beloved mutants into different teams with their own missions to save the world.
X-Men ‘97 was a fantastic hit for Disney+. It wasn’t just a sequel to the beloved 1990s Fox X-Men animated series but stood on its own as a stunning adventure with plenty of twists and turns. It also continued the strong character work and terrific writing that made the series a hit.
The epic three-part season finale had the X-Men battling old enemy Magneto on his asteroid as he attempted to wipe out Earth. It culminated in an explosion that seemed to kill the entire team. However, six months later, the time-traveling Bishop came to tech genius Forge to relate that the X-Men were stranded across time and needed help rescuing them.
Now, courtesy of Marvel Updates, season 2 will feature the various X-Men characters split into teams across the past, present, and future, all trying to survive, get home, and stop the ancient mutant Apocalypse from conquering the world.

• Wasteland Team: Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine and Morph
• Ancient Egypt Team: Rogue, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Bishop and Beast
• X-Force: Cable, Psylocke, Archangel, Sunspot and Jubilee
• X-Factor: Havok, Polaris, Strong Guy,… pic.twitter.com/ca8A8r7fxW
Here’s the quick breakdown:
The Wasteland Team: This is comprised of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine, and Morph, who are estranged in 3960 AD. It’s a dystopian future where an aged woman and a young version of Nathan Summers (aka Cable) are around. Wolverine is going to be weaker after Magneto ripped out his adamantium while shapeshifter Morph tries to bring some humor to the group’s quest to stop a greater evil.
Ancient Egypt team: Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Bishop, and Magneto are stuck in Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. That has them meeting a youth destined to become Apocalypse and the classic quandary of whether they should eliminate him to prevent future destruction.
X-Force: Moving into the present, Cable has organized Psylocke, Archangel, Sunspot, and Jubilee into a team that is more like a strike force going after enemies. The characters fit as all have been part of X-Force in the comics, and there are likely some intriguing turns, such as young Jubilee being forced to grow up alongside Cable as a military commander.
X-Factor: Finally, a team so far comprised of Havok, Polaris, and Strong Guy. This seems influenced by Peter David’s classic run on the title of the mutants as a government-backed team and likely will add a few more members. This variation may end up clashing with X-Force, given their different agendas.
This doesn’t mention how it was hinted that Apocalypse may have found a way to revive Gambit, who was seemingly killed off in the first season. The different timeline promises a grander scope for season 2 that will integrate several popular storylines from the comics. It also fits that X-Force and X-Factor are major players, given they were both popular in this decade.
We still need to see a full trailer to get a feel for the action, yet this mix of teams and time periods means X-Men ‘97 is going to be bigger and better in its sophomore year!
