The writer for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot has listed his favorite characters, which may hint at who will appear in the coming film!
X-Men fans are excited about the planned reboot, with director Jake Schreier helming the project. The latest news is that Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, who wrote Schreier’s Thunderbolts* film, are doing a new take of Michael Lesslie’s script. There are still questions of how the MCU will integrate mutants into the wider storylines as several stars from the original Fox films are set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday.
Speaking to Variety, Sung Jin discussed the film and the influence the beloved 1990s Fox animated series had on him.
"Well, it's X-Men. It's something I grew up with. I have fond memories of my father and me waking up on Saturday mornings to watch the X-Men cartoon. I read the comics. So when he comes calling about that, no matter how much you've got going on."
There’s no word on the film's plotline, though Schreier has hinted it could be influenced by Chris Claremont’s decades-long run on the book that elevated the characters to prominence. Sung Jin also talked of his favorite characters from the series.

"I love Gambit. I also love a lot of the side characters. I love Jubilee. Everyone goes for Cyclops and Wolverine, but for me growing up, I always loved the supporting members.”
Gambit has been a fan-favorite character since his debut in 1989. The Cajun mutant who charges objects (usually playing cards) with kinetic energy was made famous by the series and a memorable turn in the X-Men ‘97 sequel. He was played by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
For years, plans were underway for a Gambit solo film starring Channing Tatum in the role. That fell into development hell, but Tatum finally got the chance to be Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. His portrayal (perfect down to costume and accent) was hailed as a highlight of the film.
Jubilee has also been popular for just as long, with her power to create kinetic fireworks and fun humor. She’s had a few appearances by various actresses in the original movies, with Lana Condor playing her in X-Men: Apocalypse. She's not as huge a name as other X-Men, yet she's still a fun character to utilize for teen viewers.
Now this doesn’t mean that Gambit and Jubilee are in the movie for sure (although Gambit seems a good contender). Yet it does illustrate that Sung Jin is drawn to the lesser-known X-Men characters who can be featured in a new film. We’ll have to see how it unfolds, but hopefully this will shine a spotlight on more X-Men than just Wolverine.
