Just when fans thought the Snyderverse was through, its creator has given a look at what their Green Lantern could have been!
This March 18 marks the fifth anniversary of the Snyder Cut of Justice League. By now, any fan knows the story of how Zack Snyder had just about completed 2017’s Justice League when he had to back out following the tragic death of his daughter. Joss Whedon was hired to finish it off with multiple reshoots that resulted in a messy movie that fans hated. That ended the plans Snyder had for the sequels that would have involved the League fighting the Legion of Doom, Darkseid taking over the world, and a time travel mission to solve it.
It took a huge fan campaign for Snyder to convince HBO to give him the time and money to complete his vision of the film, which was a far superior experience. That sadly was the end of the DCEU despite all of Snyder’s plans for it. However, the director has been building up to the anniversary with several Instagram posts about the movie.
They’ve included Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, and more. Most intriguing, however, is our first clear view at Wayne T. Carr as John Stewart, the Green Lantern of the DCEU.
The picture shows Snyder on set with Carr in the special-effects prep costume for Stewart. It comes with the caption, "A hero we planned to bring into the Justice League story. Some paths remain unseen… but the green glow is still out there.”
Snyder had originally teased the movie with “form the Seven,” a reference to the classic seven heroes of the JLA. Green Lantern would have filled that role. In the end, however, studio executives wanted it cut. Thus, Snyder replaced Stewart in a final scene with the Martian Manhunter, who had been posing as General Sanwick (Harry Lennix).
The timing of this post is interesting, as it comes right after the release of the first trailer for HBO’s Lanterns series. Some fans have chided the teaser for taking these galactic heroes and setting them in a rural American environment. It’s not hard to imagine Snyder giving a glimpse of what his GL would have been like and how he would have preferred to continue his DCEU.
Snyder has hinted at possibly continuing the Snyderverse in some form (perhaps in a comic book), so this could be a hint at how Stewart would have played into his overall plans. Even if that doesn’t happen, this shows that Snyder was still dedicated to making his version of Green Lantern shine well.
