WonderCon 2014 – Doug Jones Discusses Falling Skies Season 4

At WonderCon 2014, I had the chance to sit with some of the cast of Falling Skies. Here, Doug Jones very lightly talks about what’s on tap for his character during the upcoming season, but does discuss what it’s like being the most prominent alien on the show and the immense work it takes to bring his character to life.

Jones plays Cochise, a kindhearted Volm commander who has aided the humans against the Espheni. Impressively, he also plays his own character’s father, Waschak-cha’ab, which made for some lengthy preparation as he was required to switch out costumes and makeup in order to film scenes multiple times.

Jones then details why he’s had such a strong run of playing a multitude of characters – like Hellboy’s Abe Sapien and Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer’s titular character – that require layers upon layers of makeup and effects. “Being the tall, skinny guy with a small bone structure, and a height, and not much of a waist to build on without getting too bulky. That’s a big deal for the creature effects makeup people.”

For those who want a bit more detail on how season four will shape up, Jones confirms that it starts off with the humans free and actually getting to enjoy the environment and life for a short while when “things go crazy” and everyone gets “separated from each other very quickly.”

That seems to be the main recurring facet to the new season and it’s not just relegated to the humans. That separation dynamic extends to the Volm as well. They are fighting the Espheni all over the universe, meaning the mothership that landed in season three has departed, leaving a small group of the Volm to try and handle things on Earth. As the Volm seemingly disappear, the Espheni get a stranglehold on the humans, furthering tensions between the allied factions.

Falling Skies season four premieres June 22 on TNT.
