Look At Michael Keaton’s Hypothetical Batman Forever Costume

Once upon a time, Batman’s costume had a yellow oval around the bat-symbol. Also, Michael Keaton was Batman in the movies instead of Ben Affleck. All of this is true.

Keaton memorably played Bruce Wayne in the 1989 Batman movie and its sequel, Batman Returns, both directed by Tim Burton. At one point, Keaton was going to continue on in the role in what would eventually become Batman Forever, but after Warner Bros. asked Burton to produce the third movie but not direct it, Keaton decided he no longer wanted to be a part of the film.

New director Joel Schumacher had his own ideas about what Batman should look like, and Val Kilmer got a brand new costume as a result. As you may or may not recall, it looked like this:

It was perhaps most notable (or maybe infamous would be a better word) for introducing nipples to Batman’s look. Would Keaton have been forced to wear the same outfit? Maybe not, because here’s a look at a mock-up of a proposed Batman Forever suit from when Keaton was still involved:

The thing that jumps out at you right away is that it’s closer to what you’d exect a comics-based Batsuit to look like — and it has no nipples, obviously. However, Den of Geek says the actual costume would likely still have been black, just as the Keaton suits were in the first two movies.

As for the yellow oval, it’s something I’ve grown to accept is gone, but it looks pretty cool here. Maybe Warner Bros. and DC should consider bringing it back at some point down the road.
