Marvel Moving Into Menswear With Five Four Capsule Collection

One of my favorite parts of my job is typing headlines I would never expect to be doing. This post has one of them.

While I own plenty of t-shirts and casual wear with Marvel characters and logos, I have to say I wasn’t expecting to ever be wearing anything much nicer that was comics-related. Yet that seems to be exactly what Marvel has in mind thanks to its new partnership with Five Four, a clothing brand with its own subscription clothing service for men.

The press release announcing the collaboration suggests that it will provide “elevated and confident apparel” to menswear in “capsule collections that bring together Marvel’s iconic legacy, Super Hero characters and storytelling with fashion-forward innovation.” Since I’m not up on fashion jargon, I had to keep reading to find out what the heck that all meant.

Five Four and Marvel are readying the first collection, which includes outerwear, dress shirt, graphic tees and accessories, to roll out on April 1. The clothes will be based on Avengers: Age of Ultron, and are said to include things like hidden pockets, comic panels in the lining of shirts and the Avengers logo.

“Our designers really dug through the Marvel archives to find new ways to recreate the heritage and evolution behind the brand and its Super Heroes,” Five Four CEO and co-founder Andres Izquieta said in a press release. “We’re so excited for the opportunity to work with Marvel; the collections showcase some of our best designs to date.”

There’s a pop-up location showing off the threads in New York City this weekend, but the rest of us will have to wait until next week. It sounds like the clothes will be exclusive to Five Four Club members; subscriptions cost $60 a month and much more info is available here.

I have to admit, I kind of like the idea of dressing to show off my comic book fan status without looking like a slob. I hope this takes off.
