29. Guardians of the Galaxy – Come and get your love, indeed

Guardians of the Galaxy holds a weird, special place in my heart. Since its announcement at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, my oldest brother and I were completely sold despite knowing nothing about the comic series. We clamored for each new trailer, each new commercial as if our lives depended on it.

Guardians came out August 1st. His wife’s due date was August 2nd. The running joke was that he would miss the birth of his first child just to see the movie because he knew about the movie before a baby was ever in the picture. We held the movie as our last gasp of normalcy, and thanks to BSP’s Nick, we found a 7 pm showing on July 31st.

I sat in the theater and watched Peter Quill slip on headphones and press play on his personal soundtrack. I didn’t know what to expect out of this movie, but as soon as he started dancing and the title slide filled the screen above him, I knew: this movie was going to be crazy-ass perfection.

Marvel’s biggest risk movie — using characters most people had never heard of — goes balls-out for those opening credits, making the “risk” everyone said they took look effortless. For a movie with a machine gun-wielding raccoon and a walking tree, I shouldn’t have expected anything else.

In fact, I should have expected what we got: the main character dancing through the dank surroundings on a mysterious planet to a hit song from 1974. Because why not?

We left the theater enamored with the movie and in love with dancing Baby Groot, high-fiving that we had actually pulled off seeing the movie.

My brother’s wife started having contractions four hours later, and baby arrived 24 hours after that.
