The second episode of Season 2’s Legends of Tomorrow sees the Legends meeting and clashing with one of history’s greatest superhero teams—the Justice Society of America.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow‘s “The Justice League of America” episode was extremely formulaic. However, the fun scenes and inter-team bickering made this an amusing episode. Plus, we get the musical stylings of Martin Stein—yep, the man has some pipes.

Legendary Recap

The Justice Society of America (JSA) reveal themselves and confront the Legends—thinking the group is a bunch of Nazi spies. The two trade a few words and a fight ensues with the Legends having their butts quickly handed to them.

After being apprehended, the Legends are interrogates by the JSA, and Nate Heywood reveals himself to be the grandson of Commander Steel. Nate’s dog tags were handed down from his father—Steel’s as-of-yet-to-exist son.

In Paris, the Reverse-Flash meets with Nazi Baron Krieger and want to make a trade—some super-soldier serum (yeah, I know this is DC and not Marvel) for an unknown item that’s holed up in Berlin.

Back at JSA headquarters, the JSA receive a call from the President. They’re needed in Paris to find Krieger. The Legends offer their help, but the JSA decline and want them to just get out of their hairs.

On board the Waverider, the team realizes that without Rip, they’re not coordinated—that’s how they were so quickly defeated by the JSA. Martin quickly ordains himself as their leader due to his analytical skills. The team reluctantly accepts.

Nate, who so desperately wants a connection with his grandfather (who he never met by the way), discovers that Steel’s dog tags have vanished. Bad news. It’s because the JSA will die in Paris. The Legends make their way to 1942 Paris where Stein will pretend to be Max Lorenz—Hitler’s favorite singer.

The Legends enter the Nazi club and are quickly welcomed after Stein mentions himself to be Lorenz. Ray spots Vixen and warns her about their failed mission. Krieger arrives and Martin takes the stage and sings “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music.

Nate overhears a conversation between Krieger and another soldier detailing plans to meet at a location. The Legends’ ruse is exposed when Ray refuses to do a Nazi salute. The Nazis attack, but everyone is knocked out when Stargirl arrives on the scene, unleashing a concussive blast from her Cosmic Staff.

The Legends bring the JSA on board the Waverider, and the latter team isn’t impressed (well, they pretend not to be). After a quick vote, the JSA agree that the Legends can join them on their mission. Quickly locating Krieger’s rendezvous location on a map, they learn that the trade involves something known as the Askaran Amulet—a mystical object with unknown properties. Their mission will be to acquire the Amulet.

Sara notices that Nate’s wounds take a suspiciously long time to heal and deduces that he’s a hemophiliac. She feels that it’s safer for him to stay out of the fight, but Nate is adamant in going.

Ray and Vixen have their moment in the form of her bluntly telling him that he isn’t a hero. Why? Because Ray doesn’t have real powers and requires the use of a suit.

The team intercepts Krieger’s caravan in the Fontainbleu Forest. Krieger soon injects himself with the serum and turns into a monstrous form. Steel and Dr. Mid-Nite apprehend the Amulet, but the rest of the team is in trouble. Martin flounders and is unable to direct the team. He finally has them retreat, allowing Ray and Vixen to be captured.

Krieger interrogates Ray and Vixen. When he gets nowhere, he threatens to execute Vixen. Ray quickly makes an offer to build him an armored suit like his own.

Stein is unable to form a rescue plan. He admits to Jax that he was completely overwhelmed and not cut out for the job as a leader.

Nate tells Steel that he fantasized about meeting him. However, Steel was afraid of getting too close because of his life as a soldier.

Rex proposes calling in a strike team to take out Krieger, even if it means sacrificing Ray and Vixen. Sara vocally rejects the idea, and Stein quickly proclaims Sara as the true leader of the Legends.

As Ray continues to work, Krieger grows impatient and threatens Vixen’s life again. She’s saved when two of Krieger’s men step in to notify him of more pressing matters. Ray has actually manipulated the serum and will inject himself as part of their escape plan.

The Legends and the JSA infiltrate the Nazi camp. Ray and Vixen quickly take out two armed guards ready to transport them.

Krieger, cornered, uses the serum again and transforms. He goes after Steel, but Steel is saved when he hitches a ride on Nate’s motorcycle. As Krieger closes in, an airstrike takes him out. However, another bombing hits Steel and Nate.

Being a hemophiliac, Nate’s condition deteriorates quickly. Ray gets a eureka moment and uses the serum he modified to heal Nate.

In New York, the JSA say their goodbyes to the Legends. Vixen apologizes to Ray and tells him that his choice to sacrifice the serum (which could’ve given him abilities) to save a life was definitely a heroic act.

Steel greets Nate as he wakes up in the infirmary. The dog tags reappear—a confirmation of Steel’s survival.

As Rex secures the Amulet at JSA headquarters, the Reverse-Flash speeds in and confronts him. The two have met before, but Rex has no recollection because it hasn’t happened yet. The Reverse-Flash concludes their meeting by vibrating his hand through Rex’s chest, killing him.

Legendary Moment(s)

The fight between the Legends and the JSA was a classic comic book scene. The music. The choreography. It was perfect and fun.

Thoughts for Tomorrow

The question now is: Which time period did the Rex Tyler who warned the Legends come from? This Rex hasn’t met the Legends (although now he has), but he was subsequently killed by Thawne. If Rex disappearing in 2016 is due to this, then that means he would’ve never existed long enough to travel to the future. Hence, the Legends should’ve never been in 1942. Okay, must … take … aspirin … now. And that’s why we call this section “Thoughts for Tomorrow” because it’s late and I have to think about this tomorrow.
