I’m firmly in the anti-Nickelback crowd, but there’s no question they have an ear for what sells, and this song by the group’s frontman was no exception. It was recorded by a supergroup of sorts featuring members of Saliva, Pearl Jam, Theory of a Deadmanand Our Lady Peace, and it’s somewhat haunting melody helped it work as a somber reflection on the real life heroes of 9/11 as well.

“Hero” had a wide-ranging appeal, making it to the adult contemporary chart as well as the Hot 100. It couldn’t quite swing up to #1, stalling at #3 in 2002.
