Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb wants to ‘thrill’ audiences

Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb took some time out to discuss his Spider-Man mistakes and aims with Rolling Stone magazine. Webb stated that his main aim was to, and excuse my language, make sure “the audience [is] f*****g thrilled.” He then rather bizarrely added, “I told my friends I want to ‘unleash my inner Bay’.”
Obviously this is referencing the much-hated director Michael Bay, who is world-renowned for making films with all flash and no substance. Naturally this would be a worrying thing to hear from a director, that he wants to emulate Bay, but Webb does go on to elaborate.
“”He’s a brilliant visualist who does something very few people in the world can do. In this film, there is a spectacle to things I want to embrace.” However Webb explains where he might differ from Bay’s style of filming “”If that’s used in service of creating drama for that character, and exploring a physical or emotional dilemma, then it feels great.”
So, it turns out there’s nothing to worry about. All Webb wants to do is create fantastic Michael Bay-esque action sequences that compliment character development and dramatic story-telling, not completely replace them like in the Transformers franchise. Fair enough Marc!
The decision to go for Michael Bay levels of drama seems to have stemmed from Webb’s own admittal that he perhaps play it too safe in Amazing Spider-Man “”Philosophically, the grounded quality of things was important for the performances, but I think it limited some of the visual effects.”
“There was a moment deep in the [first film’s] post-production process where a giant lizard smashed through a wall chasing a boy-man in a unitard and I said, ‘This is not grounded. “I’m going to embrace the spectacle,” he said. “I’m not going to be beholden to smallness. I want it to be fantastic, to be big, to command and express that feeling when you’re a kid and reading the comics. … I didn’t want to hide or shy away from that.”
And I can’t argue with that, even if Michael Bay is loosely involved!
