X-Men: Days Of Future Past Opens To $91.4 Million, Higher Than First Class, Short Of The Last Stand

Judging by reviews, X-Men: Days of Future Past might be the best X-Men movie ever. But even though it’s off to a strong start over this holiday weekend, it hasn’t set a record for the best opening to date for a film in the franchise.

That mark will remain with X-Men: The Last Stand, which took in $102.8 million in its first three days in 2006, before people realized it wasn’t very good. Days of Future Past earned $91.4 million domestically in its opening weekend, a good number even though it is less than what Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did earlier this year.

The good news is that X-Men: Days of Future Past blew away what X-Men: First Class brought in when it debuted to $55.1 million in 2011, and it’s on pace to become the most popular movie starring Marvel’s mutants internationally, where it’s already done very strong  business. That proves there’s plenty of life left in the X-Men brand, even at a time when super heroes are crowding the big screens in bigger numbers than ever.

Should X-Men: Apocalypse be something to look forward to? I should think so.
