No Smoking For Constantine In New TV Series
By Nick Tylwalk
Even if you’ve had limited exposure to DC’s cynical occult master John Constantine in the comics, you probably know at least this much: dude likes to smoke cigarettes. Like, a lot.
More from TV
- The Expanse: Every character ranked from worst to best
- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episodes 1 and 2 review: Aftermath
- The 9 best (and 8 worst) Arrowverse characters
- 10 things nobody wants to admit about The Walking Dead
- Harley Quinn renewed for a fifth season on Max (and it’s well-deserved)
He just won’t be able to do it on TV when Constantine debuts this fall on NBC. Just don’t blame the director of the show’s pilot, Neil Marshall, for the decision. As he told Collider:
"On network it’s the one thing you can’t smoke on network. That’s one of his character traits. We’re working around that. We’re trying to get aspects of it in there as much as possible. We’ll see."
So … does that mean they could have him smoke other things? Like a pipe, maybe? Or some e-cigs of some sort?
(Kidding, big fans of the character, kidding.)
Interestingly, Marshall also says the script for the pilot has no information on Constantine’s cancer status, which is fairly central to his backstory. But one supposes that if he’s a non-smoker in the show, the chances of him getting lung cancer are fairly slim.
At least Matt Ryan won’t have to practice fake smoking or wheezing to play John Constantine. And we’ll all get to see how this all comes together beginning on October 24, when the Constantine pilot airs at 10 pm on NBC.
