Sinister Six Set To Hit Theaters On November 11, 2016

In the latest sign that Sony isn’t 100 percent sure what to do with The Amazing Spider-Man film franchise, it’s pushing back the next movie starring the wall-crawler and going with an outing for some his greatest villains instead. The announcement was made official today that Sinister Six will be released on November 11, 2016, while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 waits it out until 2018.

We know Drew Goddard is set to direct. It’s also being described as a “villain team-up” in the official press release, which is kind of obvious.

But there are still so, so many questions to be answered. They’re big ones too: which villains will make up the movie roster of the Sinister Six? Is it possible to make the public care about a group of Spider-Man’s foes if he’s not in the movie himself? And just what the heck are these guys gong to do when they get together?

The original comic book lineup for the Sinister Six consisted of Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio and Sandman. We’ve just seen Electro, and there were brief glimpses of Doc Ock’s tentacles and the Vulture’s wings in the trailer and credits for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. I’m guessing those three are locks, as is the Green Goblin.

I doubt Sandman will make the cut because he’s an effects-heavy character on his own. Kraven is simple enough, as is Mysterio, but we also have Rhino in the movie continuity. Two of those three characters should round out the group.

I’m not 100 percent convinced this can work, but at least Sony isn’t simply following what Marvel and Warner Bros. are doing, and the disappointing box office of ASM 2 meant the studio had to try something. If Sinister Six is a hit, people are going to be a little more excited about seeing them cross paths with Spidey. And if it bombs, maybe it’s time to blow the whole thing up and reboot for 2018.
