SDCC 2014: Benedict Cumberbatch Won’t Be Playing Doctor Strange
By Nick Tylwalk
The Doctor Strange movie directed by Scott Derrickson hasn’t even officially been announced by Marvel yet — though that may change by the time Comic-Con is over — yet the casting rumors have already been flying around like they were wearing a Cloak of Levitation. One particularly strong one about Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the lead role has been debunked by a pretty reliable source: Benedict Cumberbatch.

The English actor wouldn’t take the bait when MTV News asked him if he had talked to Marvel about the film, but he did make it clear that one of his current gigs would make his casting very doubtful.
"As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called ‘Hamlet’ in London. So I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project."
That could make countryman Tom Hardy a front-runner, as his name has also been tossed around as one in possible discussions for the role. And yes, the same person playing both Bane and the Doctor would be a little … strange.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. No matter who ends up playing the Master of the Mystic Arts, Doctor Strange is expected for release on July 8, 2016.
