James Gunn To Write And Direct Guardians Of The Galaxy Sequel

The studio is certainly showing its faith even before the film officially premieres on August 1. Co-writer Nicole Perlman told The Wrap today that Marvel has already asked Gunn to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (which almost certainly won’t be its actual title). That news hasn’t been confirmed yet — something Kevin Feige could certainly do at the Marvel Studios Comic-Con panel on Saturday evening — but Gunn has nothing else lined up, so he’s available as long as he’s willing.
There certainly aren’t any shortage of release dates for any Guardians sequel, as Marvel has squatted on quite a few of them through May of 2019. Assuming these thing usually fall three years apart, that July 6, 2018 spot is looking pretty logical, maybe as part of a tag team with the third Avengers movie that May.
That’s all wild speculation at this point, and while some of the details may get cleared up before the weekend is over, it’s at least nice to know the positive buzz about Guardians is reaching all the way to the top. If it’s as good as we hope, keeping Gunn around only makes sense — and dollars, which is what matters to Marvel.
