SDCC 2014: Debut Of Arrow Season 3 Trailer
By Steve Lam
Fans attending the Arrow Special Video Presentation and Q&A in Ballroom 20 were able to get a first look at Season 3’s trailer for The CW’s Arrow. I know you guys want to see the visuals first. So, instead of torturing you with what they discussed at the panel, here’s the epic trailer:
0:00 – 0:05
We see Green Arrow standing on a building ledge overlooking the city. A female voiceover says, “Once you let the darkness inside, it never comes out.”
0:06 – 1:00 An exciting recap of Season 2. It starts out with fast-paced music and ends with a heroic rise in the tune. Oliver’s final words in this recap are: “You helped me become a hero, Slade. Thank you.” And we see an incarcerated Slade Wilson, who was put there by Oliver at the end of Season 2.
1:02 – 1:09 Karl Yune as Maseo Yamashiro saying to Oliver, “A man cannot live by two names.” Oliver, obviously in a flashback scene because of his long hair, answers, “And what does that mean?” Maseo replies, “In your case, I believe it means not having any choice.”
1:15 – 1:17 It seems that Laurel Lance will be Oliver’s business partner this season.
1:18 – 1:23 We get our first look at Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer / The Atom, who’s making a bid for Oliver’s company. Because Arrow has usually been grounded in reality, we don’t know if Palmer’s powers will be technology-based or developed internally over time. We’re not even sure if he’ll be The Atom right off the bat.
1:23 – 1:27 Oliver and Diggle have an argument regarding Oliver pulling Diggle out of field work. The reasons are unknown, but it should be interesting.
1:28 – 1:30 We get our first look at the new Count Vertigo played by Peter Stormare. Most likely a reference to the past Count Vertigo (Seth Gabriel) who died by Green Arrow’s hands in Season 2, this Count Vertigo says, “Some things never die. You, for example.” As reported before, Peter Stormare will be playing Werner Zytle — the version originally seen in the comic books.
1:31 – 1:38 A great scene with Black Canary in action. She tells a hooded Oliver, “We’re not our masks, and we need people in our lives who don’t wear one.” This statement leads directly to Felicity Smoak giving Oliver googly eyes as she walks away.
1:39 – 1:46 The moment fans have been waiting for: Oliver asks Felicity out on a date. During dinner, Oliver reveals to Felicity that he wasn’t always on the island during his five-year absence.
1:47 – 1:54 Oliver running and doing parkour through the streets of Hong Kong. The scene ends with him fighting and eventually being overpowered by an unknown assailant.
1:55 – 2:05 We get a look at Amanda Waller, who is now really meeting Oliver for the first time. They trade some “niceties” with each other, with Oliver promising that he “will never stop trying to escape.”
2:06 – 2:07 Our first look at Roy Harper as Arsenal in action.
2:08 – 2:13 Some action-packed scenes intercut with Quentin Lance in police formal wear and Green Arrow doing what he does best. Also, I love it when they do this. At 2:10, we see Ray Palmer making a presentation and the slide reads “Star City.” For a few years now, fans have been wondering why Arrow is set in Starling City versus Star City of which is depicted in the comic books. I guess this explains it here. Perhaps Ray Palmer has a plan to transform Starling City into something crime-free and forward-looking. It’s always cool when you see other media flesh out a richer history for things we’re familiar with. It really shifts the audience’s perception of a known story.
2:14 – 2:17 I’m gathering that the same fans who’ve been wanting Oliver and Felicity to further develop their fondness for each other are probably crying right about now. We see Felicity lying bleeding on a table with Oliver looking over her. What’s going on? We end on Green Arrow saying his famous tagline with his menacing deep voice: “You have failed this city!” And then, a final punch to the screen.
If you weren’t excited for Season 3, this trailer most likely changed your mind. These are the things that I would’ve loved to see, but may have been left out because they’re still filming them:
- Devon Aoki as Katana wielding her sword.
- A meeting with Grant Gustin’s Flash.
- Maseo Yamashiro fight-training Oliver in Hong Kong.
Season 3 of Arrow will premiere on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 8:00PM EST on The CW.
